Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wonderful story about Carl Laemmle sponsoring Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. But how come we get that story from a UK paper, instead of one here in the USA?
Mike: From NY Times almost 5 years ago:
https://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/13/movies/unlike-his-peers-a-studio-chief-saved-jews-from-the-nazis.html Instead of "hold on, I'm going to get me a beer" part way in, Warren should have opened the video with a beer already in her hand and said, "here, hold mah beer" as she handed it to her husband and kicked off the video chat.
But, but she comes across as so natural, so real... makes her beta husband do her bidding... ya know Instagram and shit make her look so cool to the hipster millenial crowd... wonder if she wears thong undies.
Wait, does it matter that the probability that the beer was a Mich Ultra, matter?
Yet cringeworthy as EW's efforts were, she seems a lot less thick than Romney. Low bar, I know, but there is at least an awareness of why Trump won.

“Some ideas are so stupid that only intellectuals believe them.” ― George Orwell "Excess body weight and the world of cancer"
The article was unconvincing. It is interesting that they specifically noted by states those states where excess weight and a particular cancer coincided but never talked about those states where excess weight and those same cancers do not have a significant correlation. Another weakness in this claim is this is not a study it is a data dredge and worse it was a data dredge to only find data which agreed with their preconceived conclusion. Data dredges are known for making spurious correlations into wild eyed headlines. Then there is the problem of causation. Did excess weight cause cancer? Or is it possible that the same genetic trait that caused the excess weight also makes one susceptible to cancer? Even if their correlation is statistically significant correlation does not equate to causation. I am fully willing to believe that obesity is a risk factor for cancer. However, this study doesn't show that very well. Whenever one is comparing "states," one is comparing populations that are racially and ethnically different. Hawaii? High native population. Alaska? Same. Texas? Very high Hispanic (see also NM, AZ, CA). South? African-American in both urban and rural. Midwest? African American in urban. Montana? Very white. These differences have enormous impact on all sorts of research, not only medical.
Exactly right. Demographic and meta studies are fraught with issues and those issues are seldom mentioned. Who would want to cast doubt on their 'research' paper?
What IS INDELIBLY correlated with cancer is diabetes. Obesity bashing is rife on this site, and others, but is the nascent (genetic??) diabetes driving the obesity? People who crave carbs and have a carb-heavy culture (Italians? Mexicans?? Elizabeth Warren's tribe??) also have a very high rate of diabetes. Chicken or the egg. Is the diabetes laying in wait? I come from a family that is bi-modal - some of my Mum's sisters were natural 'skinnies', 4 were naturally fat. The skinnies do not have a sweet tooth, the others do. I believe it to be genetically driven. Glad I have my Mumma's genes. Diabetes is the most pernicious of diseases. It lays the red carpet out for the other nasties - heart disease, cancer, cirrhosis, kidney disease, neuropathy. All strongly correlated with diabetes. Maybe you haven't tried Knob Creek. Forget the name, go for the taste.
You know, you can like both.
I'll see your Knob Creek and raise you a Basil Hayden's. There are lots of good bourbons available these days. I like a good rye now and again as well. We like Basil Hayden, and Whistlepig. I'm also perfectly happy with Jack Daniels as an ordinary drink.
The picture on that bottle of hooch appears to be a Treeing Walker Hound. Those are coon dogs, not bird dogs.
Since Titania claims that "gravity is a Patriarchal construct", I tend to suspect maybe, just maybe, she's a great satirist...ya think?! ;)
I think you're right, Kauf, but never underestimate idiocy of the intersectional SJW fringe.
She got kicked off Twitter, at least for a while. Pretty sure she's not SJW-approved.
The European Union: An Authoritarian Body With A Humanitarian Face: Should have "Mask" after "Face"; The EU never shows its true face.
"The Boy Scouts'" Were destroyed intentionally by the LGBTQ mafia. The scout leaders were weak but it would have made zero difference if they had been strong. Once you are in the crosshairs of this cabal you would be wise to give up and slink away. Bake the effing cake and smile as though you always intended to bake it. It will continue to work like this until a solid and vocal majority stands up to these extortionists. Who's next?
You can either go bankrupt being sued in court or go bankrupt because people no longer want to join. In retrospect, the former would have been better.
