Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The link about “Baby It’s Cold Outside” has another link to a story with a hilarious video making fun of the controversy: https://www.dailywire.com/news/39230/watch-comedian-jp-sears-mocks-baby-its-cold-paul-bois
Maggies readers will enjoy it - you should devote a post to the video, its not just funny, it’s a great takedown too. Top notch. Nine Costco secrets that make me a super-shopper for ground beef, rotisserie chicken, and chain-store pastries? Sorry, we don't eat sad food at our house.
I/we are appalled to hear how other people eat. No wonder so many are "over fed" but under nourished.
Thank you! I like sad foods and hope more people shun them so there is more for me. Love steaks, bacon, meats, chicken. Please keep getting your nutrition advice from crazies and writers so the rest of us can continue to enjoy good food at lower prices. Oh! Look over their! Kale juice...
I am my own dietitian and I don't cow tow to the latest fad. I love bacon, thank you very much, but I shun processed food (other than bacon that is). The additives in processed food are not for my body. I am usually a scratch cook. Common sense in choosing healthy food is the plan I follow.
Which additives do you think are actually harmful? Do you think that the FDA screwed up, was paid off or are incompetent in allowing those additives?
I don't think any of the additives I am aware of are harmful (unless the individual has a allergy to it) AND I don't think the FDA is acting irresponsibly in allowing the various additives.

If I read the label and there is a lengthy list of unpronounceable names I pass on the item. I prefer fresh food if possible and shy away from frozen and processed. I cook at lot and am considered a very good cook by those that have shared a meal with us. Unfortunately the science isn't always settled as to what is healthy and what is not. Just look at how they change recommendations on things like eggs and butter. I eat the way I choose and you are more than welcome to eat the way you prefer. Unfortunately even following a strict healthy diet can't save you from lousy genes. Enjoy your bacon!

"a lengthy list of unpronounceable names"
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/food/article-4572828/What-look-like-fruit-ingredients-list.html The FDA requires that all ingredients are listed so you see them. But you don't see the lengthy list of unpronounceable ingredients in any vegetable, fruit or meat you cook. Does the lack of transparency really give you confidence that your food is free of unpronounceable chemicals??? A better choice is to research each ingredient and understand why it's there and what it does. Even the unpronounceable ingredients can be Googled. Of course beware they myths and misinformation that a internet search returns.

The problem really started when the FDA started enacting guidelines saying fat was bad and should be taken out of food products. Remember those yucky "low fat" cookies that fell apart or melted in the bag? The resulting products tasted horrible. To compensate, they loaded food with sugars and salt to disguise the taste, plus the couple dozen of other additives they commonly put in now. The result is the obese and unhealthy populace we have now. People didn't start looking like that until the 1990s, but now it is so commonplace we don't even notice it.

"The result is the obese and unhealthy populace we have now."
Doesn't past a simple test. If it were the sugar and salt or carbs or fat or whatever that made people obese THAN all of the people eating these foods would be obese. But they are not. Most obesity is genetic.

How do you KNOW the food is sad? Is it crying?
NPR: Gave up on them some years ago. Those photos from El Capitan are so much better than photos taken by other climbers! You can see the horizon and everything!
I just closed my Costco account. I notice in the peanut allergy story they have to shift direction from the very rare peanut allergies to allergies, in general, to give us a good scare. House Dems can introduce any bills they like. Trump will veto them all. Much ado about nothing. And that's assuming any House bills can get through the Senate.
How long until the Stormy Daniels judgement forcing her to reimburse Trump's legal fees is used by the Democrats to accelerate their call for impeachment?
I loved the Donald, Chuck and Nancy Show on The Wall. We need more debates such as this out in the open. Secrecy has become the #1 destroyer of our constitutional republic as 99.9% of our leaders have NO idea what where, how, why or what is costs. Forget about the voter citizen having ANY idea what's happenin'! Note: the WaPo series was written in 2010. Can you image how much the problem has grown after eight years of The Zero? [Replace the (dot) to access links]:
https://home.solari(dot)com/the-many-faces-of-secrecy-with-amy-benjamin/ http://projects.washingtonpost(dot)com/top-secret-america/articles/ I would like to know how many of these women STEM graduates actually stay in STEM jobs? Just because you pursue a certain major doesn't mean you like the job on the other end.
I heard one poor girl at a college orientation say that she was an engineering major because she 'liked math.' And I was wondering, then why didn't you choose to be a math major? There's a lot more to engineering than math. STEM includes biology, pre-med, and environmental science, which are more strongly favored by women. Schools are generally designed to reward conscientiousness - an excellent quality but not the only important one - which is the Big Five trait most female-dominated.
So it's not shocking that females are now a slight majority in STEM. But because they aren't majorities in engineering, math, and physics, those are still considered to be A Problem. Slowly but surely Trump will push Europe and China into more equitable trade positions or else cut them off the US market. The US chamber of commerce is perhaps his most hostile competitor in trade reform. They have supported global trade for the benefit of elites and to hell with the peons.
Exactly right. But every president and almost every congress person sold us down that river too. Everyone in power becomes rich, even Bernie Sanders. Watch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, she will be a millionaire within 2 years and grow richer every year she stays in the House.
