Maggie's Farm

My sister and B-I-L used Pyrenees for years, and now Anatolians, on their farm. These dogs are bred to be keep guard over livestock and are fully capable of operating semi-autonomously (semi-feral?). As far as I could tell they are first and foremost loyal to keeping the livestock safe (although prone to eating a chicken here or there), next to the property, and then to their human. They aren't the type of dogs who approach nearly anyone for an ear scratching and a tummy rub.

They are (or can be when employed that way) some serious working dogs.

Re: conservatives and urban dwellers...

There are reasons why urbanites are more socially liberal that conservatives sometimes are and reasons why they are more politically liberal than conservatives, and some of those reasons intersect.

On the political side, urban dwellers are far more dependent on government services that they see, often on a daily basis. Emergency services: police, fire, medical. I can't say I've ever spent much of any time in NYC without hearing, and often seeing, sirens and such. Public works (garbage, street cleaning, snow removal, etc. Transportation - the portion of urbanites who can get somewhere without light rail, buses, taxis, etc is small. Urban dwellers at least subconsciously realize they cannot survive without these things so they like government. How could they get through their daily lives without it?

We non-urban dwellers, on the other hand, often wonder WTF we are paying for when it comes to services we don't see much of. If I see emergency services responding to something it is a sit up and take notice event. Not a normal and frequent part of my life. Public transport is not useful to me. I'm glad for public works but we don't need it constantly around us. I can imagine surviving just fine with less of those things and I would enjoy paying less.

On the social level, IMHO, urban dwellers fancy themselves more educated, intelligent, and intellectual than us non-urban rubes. They are "urbane." We, on the other hand, are unsophisticated, perhaps even uncouth. And those who self-identify as urbane, for a very long time now, also identify as more socially liberal than we. Not that they are since they seem to rarely consider their own biases and bigotries. Much easier to misapply language and define them away.
