Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Ohio State students threaten my mental safety. Fortunately, I'm up to the threat, and anyway I don't need to be all that safe.
Toxic masculinity. What is the difference between this and racism or the KKK or fascism? Substitute "black" or "Jew" or "Asian" and maybe the comparison to blatant discrimination becomes clearer. Does Detroit, Chicago and Baltimore suffer from "toxic African Americanism"? Does LA and San Francisco suffer from "toxic Asianism"? Speech like this is hate speech. Even if it were true that Chicago's problems are 95% because of blacks it is hate speech to even say that. But somehow the far left thinks hate speech is OK if they do it (just as they did after the Civil War when they formed the KKK). Why do so many "normal" people allow this?
What about toxic femininity that has killed 65,000,000 unborn babies since SCOTUS found a right to abortion in a wrinkle of the constitution. Now, that would be a legitimate issue to discuss. THAT is toxic. re A mini ice age could be on the way and it’s going to get very, very cold
The True Believers cited in the article seem to think it will all be mitigated by global warming. They can't let it go. They believe! QUOTE: Perhaps the most famous period of low sunspot activity was the Maunder Minimum of the 17th century. During that time, there was a ‘little ice age’ when the Thames froze over, although researchers believe that global warming will stop this happening again. . . . Last year, a scientist claimed the chilling effect on the lack of sunspots could actually save us from global warming – . . . Valentina Zharkova, a professor of mathematics at Northumbria University, published a paper which contains ‘the first serious prediction of a reduction of solar activity that might affect human lives’. ‘I hope global warming will be overridden by this effect, giving humankind and the Earth 30 years to sort out our pollution,’ she said. Michael Brown, an associate professor of astronomy at Monash University in Australia, said the Maunder Minimum could have been caused by other factors including the eruptions of volcanos. . . . He does not believe a mini Ice Age is enough to save us from manmade climate change. ‘There is 40% more of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the air now than during the 17th century, and global temperature records are being smashed,’ he said. ‘A new Maunder Minimum would slow climate change, but it is not enough to stop it.’ feeblemind: A mini ice age could be on the way and it’s going to get very, very cold
The study by Mlynczak et al. refers to cooling in the thermosphere, not the lower atmosphere or surface. feeblemind: The True Believers cited in the article seem to think it will all be mitigated by global warming. The evidence is that a doubling of CO2 will increase global mean surface temperature by 2-4°C, while a Maunder Minimum type event will only temporarily reduce surface temperature by 0.3-0.5°C. ...evidence...
There is no such evidence, Gasbot (and I'll add that you seem to have shifted from your previous unscientific notion that a theory was sufficient on which to hang a purported eventuality. You called if "first principles".) In fact, CO2 - which is a trace gas and which has no evidentiary connection to Global Warmening one way or another - is the product of warming. For example, sequestered C02 is released from the melting edges of ice caps to dissolve in the sea. Therefore the sea is a primary source of free C02, meaning that CO2 follows temperature and not the other way around. This is seen all over the climatic record too. Yep. The kiddiezzz have always had a problem with the definition of that term evidence be it legal or scientific.
It's almost like they make it up on their own or something. 😉 Re cannibalism in South Africa.
The same thing happened in the Congo after the whites left. The place degenerated into tribal warfare. And That’s the Way It Was: In 1972, Cronkite Warned of ‘New Ice Age’
https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/julia-seymour/2015/03/05/and-thats-way-it-was-1972-cronkite-warned-new-ice-age I did, continued to, and always will believe Cronkite. And Lowell Thomas too.
feeblemind (from link): In 1972, Cronkite Warned of ‘New Ice Age’
Cronkite was referrencing studies of cyclical climate change that would occur over thousands of years. However, anthropogenic warming has delayed the next ice age by at least 100,000 years. See Ganopolski et al., Critical insolation–CO2 relation for diagnosing past and future glacial inception, Science 2016. feeblemind (from link): "Unlike scientists often quoted by the media today, GWPF said that Lamb viewed the Earth’s climate as changing constantly and naturally." Modern scientists are quite aware of the history of natural climate change. There's even an entire subfield of climate science concerned with the subject, paleoclimatology. Any takers on a bet? We all know that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is flat broke, can't afford an apartment in DC. We also know she is an avowed socialist and of course rejects capitalism and wealth and despises those who are rich. So my bet is simple; I bet that in two years when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's first term is through that she will be a millionaire. No money bet because that would be to capitalist but I will bet a Dunking Doughnuts coffee regular on it.
For this to work, you'll need to bet someone else's Dunkin Doughnuts coffee.
The Amazon decision was probably their first big mistake. Once companies get arrogant and start making business decisions for reason other than business, they start going downhill. The red flag used to be the building of a giant skyscraper in tribute to itself.
Amazon's version of this is to put its HQs where the kewl kids are, which also happens to be areas with extremely high cost of living, super-long commute times, and high taxes. The restaurants & clubs are hip, but as a business decision, it's no more sensible than a steel company building a 65 story skyscraper with its name in top. Good points,. Why they would want to build a headquarters there is a mystery unless it is all political. Crony Capitalism seems to be not doing well lately. GE is in trouble after Immelt dismantled the company Jack Welch built.
Be thankful the world has gotten a lot better? Why would I be thankful for the world getting better when it's gotten more better for other people than it's gotten better for me? That's like expecting me to be thankful for you giving me a new Mercedes when you've given my neighbor a new Rolls Royce. You may know something about logic but you sure don't know anything about human beings if you expect them to count their blessings and be grateful for what they've got when they can easily count their neighbor's blessings and be envious their neighbor's got more blessings than they do.
Hey jerryskids, you want the Rolls Royce then go work for it, instead of sitting around bitching that you were only given a Mercedes. Honestly!
Cronkite: No, I don't believe him.

QUOTE: I found crucial to what is distinct between libertarians and valley folk that Silicon Valley’s ideology is pro-market but it is not pro-liberty. Liberty is not a value. They are highly, highly, collectivist. They believe that every single person has a positive obligation to society and the government can help people or coerce people or incentive into making a unique contribution. Greg Ferenstein If you fancy yourself a feudal lord, wouldn't you swing toward the party of neo-feudalism, i.e., socialism. THE RICH TURN TO THE DEMOCRATS
I looked at how Connecticut towns voted in the 2012 compared to the 2016 Presidential elections. From 2016 to 2016, the statewide vote for the Democrat Presidential candidate fell by 3.6%. The towns that bucked this trend, where Hillary got a higher percentage of the vote than Obama in 2012, were the wealthiest in Connecticut. (Avon the wealthiest, had a difference of 7.4%) Rank, Per Capita Income & Hillary%-Obama% 2 Darien (6/6) 18.5% 3 New Canaan (3/3) 17.9% 5 Weston (2/2) 13.5% 7 Wilton (3/3) 13.1% 6 Greenwich (12/12) 13.1% |
