Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

RE: Hillary is History
"Not because I want to Trump to beat her again, or because I want her to beat Trump. I didn't want either thing to happen in 2016. No, I hope Hillary Clinton runs for president again because it's what we deserve." Jim Treacher Hating both options and continuing to whine for 2 years that most people are too stupid to agree with you is the easiest thing in the world. And $10 says this dupe voted for stalking horse Evan McMullin, because, you know, he was just much too smart and sophisticated to vote for that icky vulgarian Donald Trump. Free speech on campus. Defending victims, real or imagined, is not the point, it's the sheep's clothing. They themselves offend victims all the time. The goal is to punish all opposition so that they don't dare speak up.
If you are accused, keep that thought in mind, though it is seldom wise to say it out loud. Making it up to the victim, supporting the victim, saying nice things about the victim's group in an effort to show good will is irrelevant. No one actually cares about that victim. The focus now shifts entirely to punishing you. They are only listening for you to say things that make it worse. Exactly right. There is also a component of very bad people who take joy in destroying others. They will do this most of their life and they will use laws that were intended to protect the innocent to further their crusade against whatever they don't like. Someone should do a follow up study of these offended and SJW types 5, 10, 20 years after they leave college and see how much trouble they have caused and survey the wreckage in their wake.
I don’t think those ‘fleeing’ socialism, are actually fleeing socialism. They’re just looking for a better deal. The handouts in America are much better than the handouts from were they came. Very few people in this world value liberty and independence.
I would posit that most of the people fleeing East Germany and the USSR were "actually fleeing socialism". People relocating from Kalifornia to elsewhere in the US generally are not.
A distinction without a difference. They weren't fleeing socialism what they were fleeing were the intolerable conditions that socialism creates. They chose to flee to countries that were not yet socialist and that could be in spite of or because of those non-socialist countries beginning to play around with socialism.
It is the nature of socialism that both the pre-socialist "promise" of free stuff and the early post-socialist free stuff is very appealing. After all you couldn't get free people to choose socialism unless there was something in it for them. It is the later post-socialism that is deadly. When all the rich and middle class wealth has been stolen and redistributed and all the productive intelligent people have either left or gone underground socialism collapses onto itself. How could it possibly be otherwise? Ask yourself how hard would you work to give away your income to people who you can see do nothing for themselves? I am reminded of a trap that Africans used to catch monkeys. They put a fist sized fruit into a hole in a tree. The monkey would find the fruit and in their greed would reach in and grab it. But the hole was just big enough for the fruit to pass through and would not allow the monkey to remove the fruit while holding it. But the monkey really wanted the free stuff, the fruit, so they refused to let it go. Even as the human hunter rapidly approached them to capture or kill them they hung onto that free stuff. It is a fatal flaw in primates and perhaps all thinking mammals that they want free stuff and will do stupid and even fatal things to get it. Thus socialism! I think that's fair. A lot of the Middle East wants to get to Sweden, for example (though Sweden is much less socialist than it was 1970-1990). Some of them just want "anywhere but here," some want "wherever I can get the best stuff," and some actually do want to go "where I can live free and maybe make something of myself."
If there were some kind of quick test for that last category I'd let any number of those immigrate. If there was a quick test for, "Where can I live free and maybe make something of myself" the democrats would quickly become anti-immigration.
Regarding Hillary and her supposed yoga.....if practicing yoga makes you collapse and have to be stuffed into a "black vehicle"....mmmmm.....no thanks; I'll pass on the supposed benefits of yoga.
Steve The promise of socialism is very attractive. Remember that Bernie Sanders was promising those college students free stuff, actually other peoples stuff, and they were cheering for him. As Margret Thatcher noted, socialism is wonderful till you run out of other peoples stuff.
In regards the Socialism meme. There were how many Americans (1000?) who went to work in the Ford factories under Stalin, in the '30s. At least some went not just for jobs. Also believe that most if not all regretted it dearly.
Regarding that bit about "decolonization" of space. I stopped reading National Geographic some years ago, owing to the growing PC content, but I never imagined it being capable of publishing so mind-numbingly stupid an article as the one referenced here. The space would have been much better used to publish photos of half-naked aborigines digging water wells or refining iron ore the hard way.
Ahhh! That brings back memories. In the 50's I was in grade school and bored. With 36 kids in the class it was easy for me to hide in the back of the class right next to the wall to wall bookcases that had all kinds of educational books and magazines NG was one of my favorites. Not only did they have really interesting articles but they had titty pictures. Good times.
I'm pretty excited! I'm sending my Mercury jacket to work without me on Monday and I'll wait and see if anyone notices that it's just my jacket...
