We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Well, you changed the subject and you didn't shut up. Two strikes, by your own measure.
Rosenhan was 45 years ago. I know hundreds more bad practitioners and screwy theories than you, because I have worked in acute psychiatric emergencies for 40 years. Yet I can still confidently say that you are generalising without knowledge.
Come down and see with your own eyes. Drop by and tell the cops that they don't really understand how to deal with people on the street while your at it.
The only credible defense I have heard for the MBTI is that it can get deeply uninformed people who pay some attention to popular culture off the dime when they are in disagreement with someone, reminding them that there are different personalities and approaches. I am damning with faint praise, I know, but that did actually make sense to me.
People want shortcuts rather than getting to know someone and thinking hard. People want justifications for their bad behavior. This is not the product of a particular age, it is the sort of thing that will always be with us. Four humors and personality types; 12 zodiacal signs in 4 categories; four personality colors. All shortcuts, all excuses.
Being a long time large company employee I've been put through this test several times. The first clue that caused me to question the test result's validity was that my classification was markedly different the second time I did the test.
It can be fun if it affirms what you already think about yourself, and that those traits are considered desirable.
"my classification was markedly different the second time I did the test.
I am a believer that it is my obligation to disinform nosey people. One point that often comes up on this blog is that the medical communioty now asks if you have guns in your house. I was ready and said a very well rehearsed "no". I am contermplating next time saying that "I have a cannon and do you want to come by this 4th of July when I fire it?". Back when I had a "home phone" i would sometimes get calls from polling companies and I would take great joy in misleading and disinforming them. I am so happy now that I have a cell phone and it is shut off 99.99% of the time. I get zero calls from politics, polls and scammers. But I do miss the fun of wasting their time and misinforming them.
I have taken this test numerous times and sometimes related to my work. I knew instictively what answers were "right" and made sure I "passed".
