Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Thurber

While cleaning out books, found a fine old Thurber collection. Thurber was a fine New Yorker semi-comedy writer, but his toons were plain charming.


I want to re-read lots of these books before I toss them in the dumpster. Including Master and Margarita.

Toss them in the dumpster?!?!?!? Horrors.

Please at least give them to the Friends of the Library for their charity book sale or to a second-hand book store. One of these days, when Google and Amazon completely take over, we won't have books any more. We need to preserve every book we have, they are going to be precious. And as Thurber would say, anyone who thinks the contrary is a booby and should be put in the booby-hatch.

Or better yet, send them to me and I'll reimburse you for the postage. And then I will donate them to the local library after I've read them. :-)

"Have it your way--you heard a seal bark" never fails to make me laugh. That line is a running joke between my husband and I, deployed when the other has a cockeyed idea worth humoring.

But it's definitely a test of the ability to appreciate Thurber's humor. Most people just look at it blankly and shrug.

I still remember my professor affixing this cartoon to the handout in first-year Contracts when we talked about "contracts under seal."

I was just looking at his cartoon series "The War Between Men and Women" as counterpoint to the Kavanaugh - Ford insanity.

But who calls them "toons", really? Is that a New England thing?

"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was an awful film.

Any book worth finishing is worth keeping. At least hand them off to a used book store. They're worth something to them, otherwise they wouldn't give you store credit in exchange.

I've thrown away some books (dropped them off at Half-Priced Books, which amounts to the same thing), but I'd never part with my Thurber cartoon compilations. "It's a naive domestic burgundy without any breeding, but I think you'll be amused by its presumption."

We remain great Thurber fans. My sons love him and are in their 30's, so James has at least one more generation to hold on.
