We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I fail to understand how any Americans can distance themselves from what happened that day and who caused it. I won't forget and I will always know exactly where I was when I herd what happened on the radio.
There was a documentary film crew in New York that day that happened to catch the impact of the first plane. They followed the fire department around and filmed the response. At one point they were filming a temporary fire command point under a shaded part of the plaza. In the documentary, I'll never forget the sounds of bodies hitting the sunroof.
Not to diminish what happened on that day but that was almost nothing. I sat there and watched the melee and confusion and the deaths and destruction and that was simply two buildings where most of the people inside got out safely. What if that had been a nuke or two nukes. It can and will happen. New York City and some of our other large cities are ground zero for this and sooner or later the terrorists will do it. What have we done to prevent it or to prepare to deal with that inevitability? Very little to nothing. We have 60,000 people checking old ladies underwear before they board a plane and some percentage of that group are actively stealing from passengers that they are supposed to keep safe.
When that day come, the next 9/11 and you are sitting watching a mushroom cloud on TV rising above some large American city knowing it will be 1000 times worse than 9/11 was don't be fooled into thinking that this was unexpected or couldn't have been prevented. It will happen, you will probably see it on TV and our government knows this, knows the risk and has done zip to stop it or mitigate the risk.
I read a very touching article about the man in that photograph. It told of his life, family and other important things that allowed someone that didn't know him to see him as someone they knew. I believe it was on one of the Breitbart sites. I cannot imagine having to choose to burn to death or leaping to our death.
