We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
In certain respects, today’s demands for the imposition of universal standards of speech and belief are a reversion to a pre-Westphalian view of the world. Like universalists of the old school—whether Christian, Muslim or Marxist—the new liberal universalists tend to reject the constitutional, religious and cultural diversity of independent nations. As they see it, the way of life they propose—the downplaying of national distinctions, the unrestricted movement of peoples and goods, the elevation of individual judgment over tradition in all areas of life—will provide what everyone needs. Not surprisingly, the correlate of this rejection of diversity among nations is often a disdain for diversity of viewpoints at home, in one’s own country.
Starting job training at age 12? Your kid's a lost cause if you're waiting that long. Half of the job is showing up on time, every day, ready to go to work. Your child should have the basic foundation of a work ethic, personal responsibility, pride in a job well done, the concept of delayed gratification, and so on long before age 12.
Not an expert, but I think that any vessel sailing in the region would have to have an ice-class hull as a matter of certification to operate, and since the Coast Guard is in charge of rescue these would almost by definition be ice-breakers.
The reports are conflicting, one set of details noted that the ship was secure, but taking on water. Whether or not the grounding was caused by the presence of ice has not been disclosed. In fact, even though the vessel is a veritable floating oasis of internet connectivity, very little has been communicated about the events, I'm guessing because (a) vessel insurance concerns normally cause companies to clamp down tight on any form of incident reporting for fear of lawsuits and (b) of sheer embarrassment on the part of the climate troopers. Second year in a row. How mortifying.
A bit more coverage of the grounding over at "A view from the beach" website. Canadian coast guard warns them of more ice than normal in the Canadian Arctic. Another PR narrative warming story gone bad.
In June, Trump departed the G7 meeting early to meet with North Korea's leader. As I recall, Justin Trudeau took the opportunity to step up to the microphones after Trump had left to talk tough about Canada 'not wanting to hurt American workers, but...'
Trump said: 'I get into Air Force One, the television’s on, and I see a news conference being given by [Trudeau],” Trump said of leaving the G-7 summit held in Canada this weekend. “And then he talked about how they won’t be bullied. And I said, ‘What’s this all about? He didn’t do that to my face, what’s this all about?’
Two months later, I guess we know what it's all about. Right, Justin?
The Last Refuge (CTH) had a good piece on the trade deal yesterday. The best one laid out the huge problem Canada would have trying to get an agreement with the US because they burned their bridges when they took the advice of Obama on how to "negotiate" with Trump. Trudeau will have to abandon his voting constituents to get an agreement...that is suicide for progressives. Another one bites the dust.
Flint got tangled up in the same issue of a right to water. If you pay your water bill you will have water. Don't pay the water bill and the water will deteriorate to a degree that you can't drink it. That people do not understand such tradeoffs does testify to the poor quality of education, parenting and political leadership.
