We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

The Dutch seemed to have lost their collective souls. Euthanasia is used so often in people inconvenienced by chronically ill children it has even shocked the government officials that passed the law allowing euthanasia of children. I understand it is very difficult to care for very sick people but it seems that some ethics should be used when deciding who can die. The Dutch are allowing people to end their lives for all sorts of reasons, including mental illness in this young woman, and perhaps they will eventually come up with street corner vending machines to help an unhappy person end it. I can understand very ill people not wanting to prolong their suffering, but jeez Louise please seek all possible ways to help before allowing assisted suicide.

The term assisted suicide is an oxymoronic euphemism of course.

If you can't kill yourself without someone else's help, that's not suicide.

A person might well believe they have the "right" to die; they have no right to force others to enable that death though.

By the way, regarding those Dutch doctors: shame, shame on them all.

At the risk of being pedantic, but just to be precise - and this does not in any way diminish how shocking this headline is - medical and hospital care services in Canada are a provincial responsibility, not a Federal one i.e., 10 provinces = 10 separate medical care systems.

So strictly speaking, this outrage was committed by Ontario, not Canada.

To give you folks a better perspective, it's akin to saying the US offered the man euthanasia when it was the state of Oklahoma.

Our Fake News Media pilloried John McCain's vice president candidate for referring to "Death Panels", when that is exactly what we have via the democrats, and what was effectively recommended by Rahm Emmanuel's MD brother (much-reduced allowable medical care for old people who the government would prefer to die off). When Hillary first started to work on taking over health care in the US, as unelected socialist "expert" in Bill "slick willie zipper" clinton's cabinet, there were something like 40 criminal penalties for doctors treating their patients, if not authorized by the government.

For a number of years I had saved on my computer (lost it when the hard drive died) a visual bell curve by Tom Daschel I think showing how the very young and then old would be treated if allowed by the government. For the life of me I can't find it on the internet as somehow they must have scrubbed it when they figured out what the public might think about it. The only ones they would treat were the ones that would be productive for the "greater good". What a utopian society they planned for us all. I think Emanuel's brother thought we should all be willing to check out at age 75. You first, you bastard!

VI, Chicago (and Illinois') plan is to hold on until there is a Democrat Congress and President, then have the Federal Government take on unfunded pension and other liabilities of Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and California,
Then taxpayer's children in other states can suffer the consequences of enormous inflation and/or financial collapse.

An alternative of course would be for Illinois citizens to change their State Constitution to limit pension payments to one (longest-term) pension based on average wages over the employment term.

The Politically-Connected in Illinois can now get multiple pensions. The "politically-Connected" can get a "big raise and big promotion" right at the end of their political "service" which boosts their take-out way beyond any contributions. Scam payments such as those made because a political employee has to live in the community, are added to salary at the end of term to boost payout, while minimizing prior payin to the pension fund.

With a State Constitution change, pension payments could be made conditional on living in Illinois. Pensions would be limited to paid-in funding, not political-bboosting. It could be made criminal not to fund pension funds. Lots of possibilities for balancing fairness to both taxpayers and people who actually worked in a useful way, while cutting back on the "politically-Connected" scams. But Illinois is crooked so it can't happen.

There has never been free speech in any nation except the United States. No other nations has anything like the First Amendment in their laws or Constitution.

They say they have free speech. But- except for criticizing religion. Or hate speech. Or...., well so many exceptions that it's obvious they don't have free speech.

I don't know about Russians meddling in Ohio's elections, but there sure were a lot of New Yorkers and Californians meddling in Ohio's elections. If Kasich wanted to appoint a special prosecutor to look into this issue, it wouldn't take much looking since all these outsiders trying to influence an election that was none of their business weren't even trying to hide their meddling, in fact, seemed downright proud of their interference.

We had better get far more serious serious about the culture wars. The Red Guards are committed and seemingly indefatigable. They cannot be defeated on the pages of poetry magazines, they must be crushed in the courts and elsewhere. I'll tell you this: Conservatives are not winning.
