We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It's a bit strange that diversity advocates frequently reference biological/ecosystem diversity as a model.
Biological diversity works because the diverse entities are engaged in a life and death competitive struggle where only the best adapted species survive.
Diversity: Since two single cells joined together for a competitive advantage, Cooperation has been an evolutionary strategy. Cooperation is what builds society, civilization, and culture.
The dementia story and the fatty acids story are related. The simple fact is we don't know and are often mislead about these so-called health studies. It seems unlikely that alcohol prevents dementia. It seems far more likely that in a study some small anomaly in statistical data cropped up and the researchers made it into something it isn't. Seriously we all know that it is vegetarianism/veganism that will save your life, prevent disease and make you live forever. Unless it is the paleo diet, we aren't quite sure yet which is good and which is bad.
Not to mention that it's a pretty sloppy mental habit to shift from "a study suggested a statistical link between behavior A and health profile B" to "eliminating A increases risk of failure of B."
