Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Permanent Residency: Doesn't seem to be "Permanent" when it has an expiration date.
Mueller on Manafort: Look! the IRS didn't do their job (10 years ago)!. Sort of like the inspector who doesn't see the Irony of writing you up for something expired 8 years, sitting on your shelf the whole time, when they've been coming every 5 months for the past 40.

Manafort's defense should call Mueller's "team" involved 10 years ago in investigating, to testify about why they didn't prosecute then but are now. Because .......Star Chamber Extortion.

The indictment alleges money laundering from "approximately 2006 through at least 2016", then lying about it. They hid the money from the IRS through foreign shell accounts and real estate transactions, and only later did the evidence become available to investigators. In addition, they were acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign power from 2006 to 2014. So the allegations include recent activities.

California has had an underculture of Mexicans - no questions asked - caring for the beautiful lawns and gardens or cleaning up construction sites for a long time. This isn't new. I ask those who live there: Is it worse, now, or the same?

Thank you for posting this. Vargas Llosa is my favorite Latin American author, for his story telling, for his viewpoints, and for his concise prose. Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 300 word long sentences get tiring, in either Spanish or English. Not to mention Gabo's being a Fidel groupie. It was one thing to be a Fidel groupie in 1961, but to remain one decades later doesn't say much for Gabo's political judgement.

The link is to an article in Quadrant, an Australian publication. One would not expect an Australian publication to publish much by or about Latin American authors, but what Quadrant may lack in quantity in its articles by or about Latin American authors, it certainly makes up in quality. Consider this article by Claudio Véliz, a Chilean who had some direct experience with the beginnings of Amnesty International. Quadrant (May 2007): The True Genesis of Amnesty International.

After reading the ableist-poem article I went for a drive and parked in a handicap stall then jogged for an hour while leaving my car idling with the air conditiioning on. Take that you gimps! I felt great, it was like speaking truth to power.
