Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

I heartily recommend the book, "Paddy's Lament," by Thomas Gallagher about the political forces behind the Irish Famine. It's full of riveting stories, hard for some people to read, but really eye opening.
I'd also recommend The Great Hunger: Ireland 1845-1849 by Cecil Woodham-Smith, first published in 1962.
Why didn't the animal emotion article mention that some of the work he cited was at BGSU? He seemed to go out of the way not to mention that institution.
Of course compulsive sexual behavior is a mental disorder. Their real point, though, is that it's something that just happens to people, and that no one should under any circumstances be held accountable for the predictable results of his own behavior.
I mean, unless they're conservatives, in which case bring out the pillories. Well said. I really didn't have more to say but the 'spam filter' demanded sustenance for its massive maw.
It will be interesting to see the decisions made by Vietnam in the coming years. I have hopes the commie leaders will make the smart choice and retire gracefully after putting in place a responsible government. That will likely not happen though, so the way forward may be perilous for the Vietnamese people. I think, eventually, they should be strong allies of the US, though again, not likely in my lifetime. Cause ya know, a lot of those folks really just wanted freedom to begin with.
WHO recognises 'compulsive sexual behaviour' as mental disorder
Sheesh. Is everything a mental disorder? Ever notice all this "psycho claptrap" really started to arise as more "Boomers" entered college and graduated with otherwise WORTHLESS degrees in PSYCHOLOGY? (there were only so many jobs available for counsellors back then, even in the mental health field, which was primarily run by the states for the truly afflicted!) All of a sudden, ordinary people who previously coped with the hard times in their lives, needed to seek "counselling" for grief, emotional shock and all sorts of "traumatic" psychological maladies never before subject to treatment by "professionals", all of whom demanded payment from health insurance companies? Economically, it's called creating a "demand," just as Big Pharma does today by running hundreds of Media ads for new, largely un-needed drugs which are used to relieve every single sympton of human discomfort, while curing NOTHING! But, damn! They make money and employ people. Based on my informal observation, counseling rarely cures anything either. It came along right about the time religion was being removed from the public square, not a very good substitute.
I've used it a couple of times, to deal with specific issues. What I find odd are the folk who'll do it for years on end - at that point the therapist looks a lot more like a paid friend than someone who's helping with a problem.
I see a counselor every week. She helps me unconfuse myself about seemingly intractable conflicts and reminds me of things I'm temporarily blind to when I'm in a rut. But I'm not looking to her to "cure" me of anything, only to help me talk through new things to try and how they worked.

For several years I walked a neighbor's dogs, until she moved last fall. Did the dogs like to go on walks? When I visit every two weeks or so, I get definite reactions when I take leashes out of a drawer. One dog starts jumping up and down. The other starts barking- as in "Let's get going!" Anybody who can't tell when a dog is happy (and recognize it as that) either isn't paying attention, or is insufficiently curious - in the way that shade in deep space is insufficiently warm. Even children with autism connect.
Around 1900 there were only about 4 recognized mental disorders. The psychologists got busy pathologizing all behavior and now the DSM has 450 different definitions of mental disorders.
"Refugees become punching bag"
The NGOs are fostering an invasion. The correct way to fix these problems is in the home country before they become refugees. The reason the NGOs want refugees and transport them to Europe and the U.S. is that they want to change the culture in these countries and destabilize them. The NGOs are breaking laws and working for the far left, socialist and communists, and their goal is to end democracy. They are succeeding while at the same time trying to appear sympathetic to human suffering. This is the new tactic of the far left instead of armed invasion a kind of "poor me" invasion where the invaders arm up after they are ensconced in country. The "one world" elite failed to take the leaders of Eastern Europe aside and explain their plan and offer shares of the spoils so the Eastern European leaders are acting in their country's best interest. NGO's are SJW cliques...where else can you find employment with a "studies" degree than in an NGO or the government. States and countries tired of this BS need to ban the NGO's or require they are licensed and bonded like any business that requires minimal degrees of performance. Hold the NGO liable for welfare reimbursement and criminal damages of their clients and the whole scam would cease. Let's see if the Christian sponsor's can afford the social justice costs they dump on citizen taxpayers.
Eastern Europeans have enough troubles already. They're smart to not let middle-eastern immigrants in.
A lot still remember the Battle of Vienna and other attempts by Islam to subjugate Eastern Europe. There are no "refugees" or "immigrants." There are simply invaders.
Maybe the Hungarians remember what happened when the Hungarians arrived 1000 years ago, They stayed after wiping out who was there before.
Strzok's behavior is far more than mere arrogance in todays corrupted FBI. A 7/13 article at Cold Fury is enlightening as it looks at his testimony through a post modern lens.

There is no longer any objective truth to be found at the management level of the FBI...only a narrative. "The Strange Case of the Missing Russians"
Putin just disclosed that the Hillary campaign received $400 million from Russian interests which was illegally transferred from Russia, and his government is willing to work with Mueller to investigate that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U95AmR3t6iU&feature=youtu.be&t=156 I suspect this is the end of the "Russia Probe." Hmmm. 'compulsive sexual behavior' as mental disorder.
Didn't Cheech and Chong have a bit about that? "I'm crazy about that stuff!" DIY guns: The potential for his new site, if it functions as Wilson hopes, would also go well beyond even the average Trump supporter’s taste in gun rights. The culture of homemade, unregulated guns it fosters could make firearms available to even those people who practically every American agrees shouldn’t possess them: felons, minors, and the mentally ill.
I don't like this either. But those felons would need to own equipment that costs many thousands of dollars. And every part of our law still says that they CAN'T POSSESS these DIY guns. While I appreciate that this is informing me of a legal and technology. The bigger problem is that the writer ignores that guns have gotten into the wrong hands long before anyone had made it possible to 3D print them. Not to worry about Cal Poly SBO. Pretty soon when the quality of research applications becomes so substandard that the NSF won't fund serious scientific research--only funding group hugs, the school will start to need more funds form alums and concurrently that funding will be drying up as they see the degradation of scholastic quality. My bet is that it will have lost it's reputation for excellence within 5 years. Oh well.
