Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

U.N. Report Faults Trump For Obama Poverty, Media Fall For It
NO, the Media didn't "Fall for It", they knowingly and willingly participated in the dissemination of UN falsehoods; that's what passes for "news" from these Dan Rather-like hacks these days: "Fake, but true!" Where the heck does George Will live? Has he complete lost touch with reality? Is he just another old guy looking for attention from the young gals? Sheesh !
Many of these media "conservatives" have always been shills for the left. They were and are plants who obfuscate the left's activities. They do this by stirring up outrage, then directing that energy toward impotent or shills who are actually in office (think John McCain). They also do this by degrading effective politicians, criticizing them for a lack of etiquette, even when their positions and effectiveness are praiseworthy.
Will hasn't lost touch with reality, it's just that his real agenda has been made more clear with the presence of Trump in the GOP. Dr Torch, you wouldn't be thinking of David Brooks of the New "York Times, or George Will of the Washington Post/ NBC News/MSNBC would you?
A case study in Trump Derangement Syndrome. There is something seriously wrong with your cognitive abilities, your respect for liberty and self rule, if you think the democrats are the answer. Insane!
Roger Simon has a good column in PJ Media (https://pjmedia.com/rogerlsimon/why-the-left-is-having-a-nervous-breakdown/). It's about the derangement of the Left, but it pertains to Will as well. He quotes China's Chairman Deng Xiaoping, "I don't care if a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice." Trump is catching many of the mice that Will has been gnashing his teeth over for decades, but that's not good enough for him. He is apparently, one of those "who obsess about whether a cat is black or white and couldn't care less if it catches mice."
George Will is way past his "sell by date." mudbug: He quotes China's Chairman Deng Xiaoping, "I don't care if a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice."
Except that Will holds the same positions with regards to, for instance, the importance of free trade and the deleterious effects of deficits, but Republicans under Trump have abandoned the field on those policies after having held them for generations. The problem for moderate Republicans is that if they oppose Trump, they will be primaried on the right, so they avoid direct opposition to Trump hoping to survive until the political winds change. Will's suggestion is to make sure moderate Republicans realize that if they don't stand for traditional Republican values, they will lose support among moderate Republicans. Wrong in both paragraphs. Conservative republicans have always and still are in favor of free and FAIR trade. The so called moderate republicans, the ones that have for years sold us conservatives down the river with their "can't we all just get along" mantra are the allies of the left. The moderates have 'compromised' our values and principles to the point that there is not much difference between a republican and democrat. True conservatives are still against massive government. Massive spending.
Moderate republicans are part of the problem. Republican In Name Only - RINO. RINO's have been failing for years. It has been RINO's that have failed time and again to keep lefty Marxists out of the judiciary. The compromises have always moved the country further left. The left rarely if ever compromises. It was a RINO that coined the term, voodoo economics. It was a RINO republican that coined the term Kinder, Gentler conservativism. It was the RINO’s in the party that put up the hapless Bob Dole. It was a RINO that ran on compassionate conservatism; further watering down the principles of conservatism. It was a RINO, who suspended his campaign, at a key moment, thus handing the White House to a far-left Marxist. It was that same RINO, helping the left, who set the IRS on the true conservatives of the party, the Tea Party. A ten-volume set could be written on the compromising RINO’s, and how they have been battling conservatism for the past three-quarters century. Will can spare me his drivel about Republican values. These RINO’s need to be primaried. They need to be driven out of the party. We have tried to get along. The left needs to be defeated, run out of the country. It is the left’s ‘values’, that have been found lacking. It is the left’s values that the moderate republican seems to hold in higher regard than that of traditional conservatism. B. Hammer: Conservative republicans have always and still are in favor of free and FAIR trade.
Trump is unilaterally imposing tariffs, including against allies, claiming a national security basis. B. Hammer: True conservatives are still against massive government. Massive spending. Conservatives have also traditionally been against excessive deficit spending. The claim is that "I don't care if a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice." However, Will doesn't see what Trump is doing, tariffs and deficits, as catching conservative mice.

That's why neither you nor Will understand Trump. He is not out to catch conservative mice as they hunt the fields and forests for their daily bread. Trump is after the liberal mice that hang out in your cabinets making a meal out of what we have purchased. The US Chamber of Commerce pours millions into buying favors from politicians in order to keep international corporations free of tariffs and oversight in order to maximize their profits at our expense. That is now well on the way to being over and that is called fair trade. NAFTA will no longer be used as a funnel for many countries to skirt tariffs.

indyjonesouthere: That's why neither you nor Will understand Trump.
Trump is disrupting long-standing institutions and mores that his supporters on the political right see as sclerotic at best, and corrupted at worst. That course is antithetical to conservatism proper, the belief in the importance of traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, especially of long-standing institutions and mores. Rather, that is right-wing or even reactionary: Burn down modernity to return society to a previous state of righteousness, often defined in terms of a purer ethnicity.

And which long standing institutions are you speaking? All the three letter acronym bureaucracies, created in the last 75 years? Really? You expect conservatism to conserve the corrupting pills of socialism? Okay, George Will. My mistake.
I want to conserve the norms of a free man, not some quasi slave to the state. A captive to the mob of public opinion. One who must constantly look over his shoulder, checking with the News Speak dictionary for everything he must think and feel. I hope Trump is the man that finally, "...stands athwart history and yells, Stop!" A man that destroys the long held institutions and mores of the left. Brings some sense and pull back to the institutions of a free republic.

The last 75 years encompasses three generations, a third of the history of the United States, the defeat of fascism, the end of Soviet communism, the civil rights movement, the moon landings. Where you been at? Yes. Institutions created 75 years ago are long-standing in the context of American history. Turning back the clock 75 years to undo modernity is reactionary, by definition.

The Wall... preferred solution of simpletons. It won't work because it doesn't address the push/pull factors that spur illegal immigration. It only makes it a little more difficult, because the dimensions will be 3000 miles x 30 feet. Pretty easy to go over or under that thing. Or around.
The biggest things that could be done to deter illegal immigration are to be serious about prosecuting immigration court claims, and to replace the paper I-9 process with E-Verify, then punish employers who hire illegals. This removes or greatly mitigates two of the strongest "pull" factors - the promise of jobs in El Norte, and the assumption that there will be amnesty or a soft landing zone for those who arrive illegally. The House is considering making E-Verify mandatory for all employers. That'd be a good start, and a lot better return on investment than a wall. I agree that other factors would work better, but I still like the wall in addition. I have never expected it to solve 100% or even 50% of the problem. If it makes it harder, then fewer will get through.
I like the wall as well...seems to work well for Israel.
E-verify? Why is it that employers should be responsible for what is an inherently Fed Gov't function?
It's Government responsibility to defend our borders, not employers. And while you are finding fault w/ the concept of a wall, how about the obvious faults w/ E-verify? Fake/stolen IDs. Hassles and expenses for employers. Bureaucratic growth and abuse. It's a lousy investment that has already been shown to fail frequently. As for the wall, the concept is fine IF the US was willing to enforce border security. Sensors and detection schemes to catch violators exist...but they can be given bad press. Boo hoo. It's a matter of will by the government, and informing citizens how necessary it is. Actually I see more legitimacy in employers making sure they are hiring legal employees through E-Verify than I can see government requiring employers to collect income taxes from their employees and sending that to the government.
Of course your comment is a straw man argument, but it somehow makes you feel better.
I have never understood why government can require someone to do a government function, like tax collection, without compensation. Not much different than the current requirement just set forth that one state can require another state to enforce their sales tax laws. I don't see a problem with a government mandate to verify legal employment status when the government supplies the means to do so just as government records (pubic school, trade school, or university) can be accessed by employers to verify qualifications for a job you advertise.

Don't make employers "responsible". Fine them $1000 a day per illegal alien employee.
SANDERS STORY
Isn't the owner so very special and so very stupid. "I took a vote of the staff." Why of course the staff would vote against her and risk being fired for some superfluous reason. I think ignorant petty b*tch would aptly describe the owner. BDS has ties to Pali extremists? How could that possibly be? You MUST be putting me on...

If one had the money one could hire someone to gather up a busloads of black homeless people and have them arrive during the noon and evening rush. They couldn’t refuse black people could they? It would be racist! How long would it take to run off the regular trade if that was done for awhile? Haw, yes that's precisely what they need, a good Starbucking.
Aggie, yes, instead of making Red Hen the worlds largest public toilet like Statbucks, Red Hen could become the world's smallest most exclusively-progressive, non-public toilet. That would cover the entire range of toilets.

What goes around... RE: Trump Investigation.
Ordinarily, evidence of a crime having been committed is identified and then an investigation is begun to determine the individual, or individuals, that committed the crime. In this case, the investigation was begun before evidence of a crime was established and documented. The fact that no evidence has been found and more than a year has passed and many millions of dollars have been spent, shows clearly why it's best not to investigate until the fact of a crime is firmly established. |
