Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Ah yes,the pony thing
My ex wife got into that world, I stayed home, couldn't handle that kind or weirdness. She also was a dominant who specialized in 'recreational piercing' She'd meet up with men (and some women) who wanted a little bit of controlled pain the enhance (?) their sexual release. None of that had any appeal for me whatsoever. Hence we decided to part ways (though we still keep in touch occasionally) Prof blames mathematics for 'global disparities in wealth'
He is a Professor of Mathematics Education. One more example of the nonsense that Ed Schools peddle. Math Ed seems to have a disproportionately high concentration of these nut cases. For example: A math education professor at the University of Illinois contends that teaching geometry and algebra perpetuates "white privilege." Gringo, mathematics is what separates us from cave dwellers, so yes, it does create wealth, as it creates civilization. Attacks on mathematics, which is inherently apolitical, are attacks on civilization.
The univversity of illinois used to be a good school, but like mizzou it has fallen from competence in its diversity and "intersectional" corruption of its educational function. Too bad, don't send your kids there. Seems to me it would spread "white privilege" to people of color. Or would that be "cultural appropriation" by them?
FDA Nears Approval of Ecstasy Drug for Treating PTSD
I remember when MDMA was made schedule 1 in 1985, all the news reports were on how this was a treatment drug and the banning was unexpected and largely capricious (Thanks Reagan!) But now the DEA is still holding out, making claims that deny reality but protect their own existence. Why do we even have a DEA? Just another federal police agency to serve as tyrants over the populace. Re: The gender gap in higher education. Part of the problem is that the federal government subsidizes gender bias with grants and loans made to women going to college. Someone in government wanted this result and you the tax payer paid for it.
“Democrats put illegal immigrants before they put American citizens. What the hell is going on?”
The president should declare a national emergency. Close the Southern border, don't allow anything to cross in either direction except for illegals going back home. He should begin charging these countries for our expenses to house and transport the illegals. We need to build the wall, get more border guards and more ICE agents. We need fines, perhaps a $1000 a day for anyone hiring a illegal alien. Begin a massive effort to find and deport those who are here illegally. This is a crisis which will destroy us as a nation if we don't get control of it. GoneWithTheWiind: The president should declare a national emergency. Close the Southern border, don't allow anything to cross in either direction except for illegals going back home.
Another "conservative" advocate for giving the federal executive unregulated power. Hundreds of billions of dollars of goods cross the border every year. Mexico exports cars, machinery, and food. Mexico imports machinery, vehicles, plastics, and medical equipment. Also, goods from countries farther south also cross the Mexican border. In addition, families often cross to visit one another, while tourism is a big industry for U.S. and Mexican citizens. Zach, Bird Dog liberally (if that is the appropriate word?) doused his site today with clinton corruption, perhaps to lure your reflexive defense. (so much corruption, so little time to describe it all) So it is a surprise to see you defend mexico trade and tourism. If the mexicans want trade and tourism, they should shut down the drugs, gangs and illegal immigration they permit sponsor. They should block the US-bound illegal aliens at their southern border, rather than facilitate them to their border with the US. If they can't, or won't do it, then it is reasonable self-defense to shut the border down completely.
jaybird: If the mexicans want trade and tourism, they should shut down the drugs, gangs and illegal immigration they permit sponsor.
Mexican drugs and gangs are primarily the result of U.S. consumption of drugs. Based on your simplistic analysis, the U.S. should merely stop consuming illegal drugs, so as to stop fueling the criminality which is undermining Mexican society. It's not such an easy problem to solve, as the U.S. should know by now. jaybird: They should block the US-bound illegal aliens at their southern border, rather than facilitate them to their border with the US. Mexico has deported half a million people who crossed their southern border since 2014, primarily through Chiapas. It's not such an easy problem to solve, as the U.S. should know by now. Yup Zach, its not the drug gang's fault or the mexican government's fault, its the asphalt. That is, according to you, its the asses fault who consume drugs, who are in Hollywood, the entertainment industry, the big city liberals who do mexican drugs. San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Houston drug gangs serving leftist consumers in the big druggie cities. Lots of demand and money from big-city "progressives". Maybe they do share some of the blame, but completely shutting down the border would significantly slow it down.

"Mexican drugs and gangs are primarily the result of U.S. consumption of drugs."
Child pornography is caused primarily by cretins willing to consume child pornography, right? By your "non-simplistic" reasoning, the responsibility lies primarily with those who create a market (no matter how hideous) - the demand - for something, not those who satisfy it. Nice to know.

The drug epidemic has many rural victims, along with many in the Rust Belt. jaybird: Maybe they do share some of the blame, but completely shutting down the border would significantly slow it down. Because of a change in technology, a lot of drugs can be simply mailed to the U.S. A single dose of fentanyl is less than a milligram. Closing the Mexican border would cause only a temporary drop in drugs entering the U.S. If you believe in the power of markets, then as long as there is demand for a product, then people will find a way to fill that need. In Mexico, that means extortion, bribery, murder, as the case may be. Bill Carson: Child pornography is caused primarily by cretins willing to consume child pornography, right? If no one consumed child pornography, then there would be no business enterprises catering to child pornography. Bill Carson: By your "non-simplistic" reasoning, the responsibility lies primarily with those who create a market (no matter how hideous) - the demand - for something, not those who satisfy it. You should read more carefully. We pointed out it is not simple to control either the supply or demand side of the drug trade. But as long as the U.S. demands drugs, then there will continue to be a drug trade.

"You should read more carefully."
I did read carefully - here is what you wrote: "Mexican drugs and gangs are primarily the result of U.S. consumption of drugs." And, again, I brought up the issue - too implicitly for you to pick up on it, evidently - of whether the existence of demand for something justifies satisfying that demand. For example, should an African enslave fellow Africans and sell them to the English merely because the latter will pay money for them? Again, should someone provide something solely because someone else will pay for it? "We pointed out it is not simple to control either the supply or demand side of the drug trade." You said the primary culprit was demand: "Mexican drugs and gangs are primarily the result of U.S. consumption of drugs. Based on your simplistic analysis, the U.S. should merely stop consuming illegal drugs, so as to stop fueling the criminality which is undermining Mexican society. It's not such an easy problem to solve, as the U.S. should know by now." After the fact you acknowledged more in the way of symmetry between supply and demand: "We pointed out it is not simple to control either the supply or demand side of the drug trade." You gotta up your game, Tex.

We don't support extortion, bribery, and murder. Unfortunately, every time someone buys drugs on the underground market, they are helping to fund extortion, bribery, and murder. Bill Carson: You said the primary culprit was demand: Without demand, there is no market. When demand is sufficient, even if there is risk, people will find a way to fill that demand. It's hard to hold Mexico as primarily responsible for being overrun by murderous gangs when it is being fueled by billions of American dollars. Mexico is fighting the problem of supply, but U.S. demand is the driving force.

Zach, while there may be a few poor "rust belt" addicts, they are not the big-city drug money consumers you blame. You must admit (if you want any credibility here) the big drug money you blame comes from the Hollywood-entertaiment and big city progressives. And if you do not support bribery, why do you so tenaciously support and defend the clintons? The clintons took $145 million cash bribes russian Rosatom, and “speech” in Moscow. The clintinista Podestas got millions from Russian deals. And the Uranium One scandal. That doesn't include the corruption of the Steele-Fusion-FBI-DNC-clinton conspiracy.
So you do support bribery and corruption.

Another lie because solutions to the strife caused by leftists (such as yourself) really aren't hard to attain.
I'm fine with showing who benefited from slavery. I also think that the paintings of people who were, or had family members who were abolitionists should be displayed. Abolition sentiments were strong throughout New England, and there were hundreds of families where one or more members were strong abolitionists, many of whom put their lives on the line to help free slaves and bring them north LONG before the Civil War started.
I believe that the first slave owner in the U.S. was an African American.
An interesting thing happened during the civil war. There were perhaps 10,000 or less Americans who owned slaves. Most of them died in the civil war. Almost everyone else was innocent of having ever owned slaves. Anon: An interesting thing happened during the civil war. There were perhaps 10,000 or less Americans who owned slaves. Most of them died in the civil war. Almost everyone else was innocent of having ever owned slaves.
That is incorrect. The 1860 census showed that 35% of families in what would be the Confederacy owned slaves, nearly half in Mississippi and South Carolina. Slavery was an essential component of the Southern economy as then structured. Ref language of the IG report
Quite a few people seem to be upset about the seemingly non committal language, but it's my understanding that this is normal for such a document. An IG report is supposed to be a dry summary of the facts, it's up to prosecutors and authorities as to what to do with the facts. According to the IG report the problem has been the authorities and the prosecutors.
Just one of the problems.

He is an education major. When I was an undergraduate the education majors were notorious for being the dumbest kids on campus. We made jokes about them. Ray, true dat. The education majors, even those studying to be math and science teachers, couldn't take the math or science courses from the math and science departments, because they struggled in those courses of substance. I assume that "education" departments" still keep their students away from substance, subject matter knowledge and competition
Too true: the comment was "those that can, do; those that can't, teach" - you would see colleagues who couldn't hack the STEM courses heading to the faculty of education. Which is unfair to the many excellent and dedicated teachers, but totally true about the - unfortunately - also many time-servers who went into teaching for the benefits and who milk the system for same, while delivering minimal education to their pupils.
The problem of bad teachers has been around for eons; my dad (an excellent and conscientious teacher who always put his pupils first, even when it meant handing out punishment for violations of the rules) would mutter about some of his colleagues; current teachers in our family do the same. But I was fortunate in that - generally speaking - my teachers were really great, even if I was not always appreciative at the time. Re pony the fetish. Don't look. You can't unsee it.

Yippie ki ya, Pasture Patty. There is code-speak regarding the ethics-free or ethics-neutral studies of mathematics. That's nothing compared to the lack of ethics in feeling-based or socially-based studies. Yet the latter has a difference - the old ethics is being tossed a new one is being inserted. Something that is neutral and aloof from the new ethics is therefore dangerous, as it interferes with the conversion.
Also, it represents reality, which is difficult to argue with. Border crisis and separated families. I will hazard a guess that those without children look at the pictures and think "how horrible that we do this terrible thing to sad little children," while people with children think "what the hell were their parents thinking bringing them into this?"
Ahhh...it's officially summer. My favorite picture EVER has been posted on Maggie's Farm again.
