In fact, Trump accomplished little and damaged much. Yes, the U.S. should engage with North Korea. However, the U.S. President shouldn't make excuses for North Korea's atrocious human rights record, shouldn't stop joint exercises with South Korea without firm and specific commitments, and most of all, shouldn't say the leader of friendly and democratic Canada is dishonest, that the greatest threat to the U.S. is the free press, and that the ruthless dynastic authoritarian leader of North Korea is honorable.

What we can learn from this is that nukes work. Since developing a nuclear capability, North Korea has met on equal terms with the U.S. President, stopped joint military exercises by his adversaries, and the U.S. President has announced that he wants to end long-standing troop commitments to Korea. In return, North Korea made vague references to denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, less than they have promised in the past. Sanction only work when other countries are willing to follow America's lead. Division will lead to a weakening of sanctions, something that is already happening. Not a bad day's work for Kim, but one that is underpinned by nukes.
