We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
It's not the ideology that failed the people, it's the people who failed the ideology. Socialism works fine if you have the right people and if the people aren't right, well, you'll just have to keep culling the herd until only the right ones are left. I'm not sure how many we'll have to cull, but we're somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 million so we gotta be getting close, right?
Reminds me of what Monroe said in regards to the checks and balances in the Constitution that limited the government's power, something to the effect that if men were angels they could be trusted with the power of government but if men were angels they'd need no government. Or as Machiavelli put it, the way men live is so far removed from the way they ought to live that anyone who abandons what is for what should be pursues his downfall rather than his preservation. Any system that assumes as a first step that you're going to change human nature is a system doomed to failure.
