Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Earlier and earlier training for toxic masculinity removal: It's like the whole idea of going earlier and earlier to rescue at risk kids academically, or earlier and earlier to prevent parents from treating girls and boys differently. Eventually you get all the way back to birth, and [i]it still doesn't work, dammit![/] Maybe it starts before birth....
Well, certainly. Isn't the usual line that it's better to halt a pregnancy than to risk the misery of an unwanted child's life?
Maybe it starts before birth. Maybe with the parents. Maybe toxic masculinity in boys is the result of negative or no role models in the home. I'd bet the farm there's a very high correlation between toxic masculinity in boys and their coming from a dysfunctional home. [Completed that for you.]
I think you're onto something. If there were no males in the picture, there wouldn't be any kids, eliminating the risk that 50% of the kids will turn out to be toxic males. Maybe China can keep eliminating a large fraction of female fetuses and we can eliminate the male ones. Eventually the two countries will have to get together.
Conservatives prefer that explanation, but it's subtler than that. It's most genetic, and somewhat prenatal. If you are the sort of good-DNA dad who would have stayed around and nurtured your kids, the followup in adulthood is that your kids turned out pretty well, even if you were killed in a war, fighting a fire, or of some unusual disease that struck you down. OTOH, if you delivered your bad genes but were in a situation where you were more compelled to stick around and be a dad, they still didn't turn out that great.
Fathering isn't useless, but you (and mom) did most of your important work at conception. After that, preventing disaster and trauma is your primary task. No eating lead, no blows to the head, no serial molestation. Most "good parenting" produces only marginal gains. However, we do it because it's the right thing to do, and it makes everyone's life richer to do family things together. that should be enough. "Toxic masculinity"
This is simply bigotry. Typically these "professors" are dykes who hate men. I don''t know this particular professors biases and prejudices but it seems apparent that she simply hates men. We could ignore these jerks but we should shame them for what they are. By the way, I am a little tired of the gender who celebrates the legal right to kill babies talking down to me about "toxic masculinity". They need to look in the mirror. 60 million babies killed and they think we should listen to anything they have to say? Disgusting. "Feds pay $670 a day for each unaccompanied illegal alien child"
The congress needs to make it crime to even be in the country illegally subject to immediate and unappealable deportation. No more waiting for a court, a lawyer or a judge. Take it out of the hands of those who use our laws against us. Second time in the country illegally equals mandatory jail time followed by immediate deportation. Additionally congress should end the gravy train. Restrict any spending by federal entities for illegal aliens and for that matter any immigrant. We used to have sponsers required for immigrants. The taxpayers shouldn't be funding this terrible immigration policy. But according to the feminists there is no difference between men and women. That being the case, how can there be toxic masculinity? This is why feminists are so funny. First they claim men and women are the same, then they complain about men's behavior and how men oppress them. Women are the eternal victims of men.
They say different things in the morning than they do in the afternoon. You have to keep up, or you'll get slapped.
Carbon Pollution is lowering kids' scores: It's affecting the teachers WAAAAAY more.
The "Educated Elite" are taught that they are elite, and very little more. Will Trump critics ever admit to being wrong? No. Gaza rocket takes out own power lines: "Hoist on own petard" comes immediately to mind. BD, I enjoyed reading "Harvey Weinbstein and the Clinton Protection racket" - thanks. I'm surprised that the article hasn't activated our Zach robot, which is programmed to protect the clintons from bad PR like these quotes:
“another great thing about Trump winning the election: Hillary Clinton isn’t president” *** Well into the Monica Lewinsky scandal—which followed the Gennifer Flowers scandal, the Paula Jones scandal, the Dolly Kyle Browning scandal, the Elizabeth Ward Gracen scandal, the Sally Perdue scandal and the Kathleen Willey scandal—feminist icon Gloria Steinem wrote her infamous New York Times op-ed, announcing the “One Free Grope” rule for progressive men. “He takes no for an answer,” Steinem explained. Whether he was groping Kathleen Willey in the Oval Office or dropping his pants for Paula Jones in the Excelsior Hotel, she said, Clinton “accepted rejection.” Soon thereafter, we found out about Juanita Broaddrick." re Kid’s Lemonade Stand Shut Down by Cops After Someone Called and Complained
Cops have nothing better to do than shut down lemonade stands? Perhaps there are too many cops if they have time for this bs. Well . . . it always easiest to push those around who can't push back. The call should have been ignored. The kids should have had a "minority" partner. The police would be afraid to shut them down and if they did shut them down you could sue the city for discrimination, get the cops fired, wind your case and walk away with a million or so and likely the Cheif of police would have to resign in shame as well.
There's always someone who will call the cops, isn't there? The complainant should be shunned by his neighborhood.
The prevailing theme in over half of today's stories, indeed in our modern age, is the abuse of power without the prospect of consequence or shame. As we can see, a year into the new administration here in the US, the tactics continue at large and at will. When will fair-minded people declare that enough is enough, and start to act accordingly? Personally I keep looking for signs that people are coming around and stating to moderate their behaviors - or signs that some of their tactics are being deployed back at them by people frustrated from waiting to see moderation. As Remus says: Stay away from crowds.
The problem with the statistics presented in the link "More Drivers Killed Under the Influence of Drugs" is that marijuana is detected long after the impairment has passed - several days. So, all the higher percentage of drivers testing positive for marijuana means is more drivers have used it in the last several days than have used alcohol in the last several hours. Not a meaningful comparison.
Probably anyone who knows a pot user will tell you that even days after they last used they are still "out there". I couldn't tell you why but you can drink till your drunk and 24 hours later you are normal but pot smoking seems to have a permanent effect on your psyche and you act "looped" all the time. And the funny thing is without exception the pot smoker is unaware of their loopiness and think they are acting "normal".
Too bad nobody cites the study from JAMA back in June of '90 or '91. Done by Aeronautics and Space Medicine, as I recollect. Subjects sat in a flight simulator and set base line meaurements, then smoked a bit of dope, with a roughly estimated dose of THC. Follow up times were, as expected, markedly slower. Same test after 24 hours still showed reaction times measurably affected, with half the pilots sayin' they could tell and the other half thinkin' they were fine. And, Random Walk, if you think that the strength of the weed then was anywhere near what's out there now, you must be smokin' too much of that stuff. Had one guy tryin' to tell me that it wasn't fair 'cause when you're flyin' you're too busy for the measurements to be accurate. I guess his readin' comprehension may've been questionable, since the study involved time in a simulator and they knew they were in there to take part in a study involving timed reactions and therefore would've been forewarned.
