Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Nice article rounding up the clinical studies of marijuana. Now how about a social-science survey. My experiences visiting the Pot States (Colorado, Oregon, California) is that folks there are developing a major give-a-sh*t attitude, one that reflects badly in their goods, services, and general quality of life.
Still, if folks want to pre-emptively handicap themselves in the Great Game of Life, me and mine will seize the advantage. The future belongs to those who show up, not some potheads tokin' on the couch. That is an interesting observation. Being a 4th generation Colorado native, born in Denver in 65, I have witnessed a lot of change’s around here. It used to be a really friendly place. I always thought the give a sh*t attitude really started in the early nineties, when the population boomed. Folks coming in from Chicago, the east coast, and California. Nice to know it wasn’t those people. It is the two years of pot legalization that did it.
Wow! Good observation! (NOT!)
Legalizing marijuana didn't all of a sudden make it available in areas where no one could ever buy it before! Here in the Denver area, since the 1960's every kid in HS knew who was dealing out of their lockers. Ganja has been the N0. 1 cash crop in Kansas for years! The smart guys grew it between the rows of corn---there's a reason its called "weed" and that because it is one, growing vigorously everywhere. Colorado and other states just did away with a really stupid concept call "Prohibition" which has NEVER worked to eradicate human vices! As with gambling, the States now get to control a grey market and profit from it; instead of expensively failing to eradicate a nasty black market! Interesting how people in power now push pot when there is significant evidence showing it is harmful, especially psychosis/schizophrenia, reducing mental function (temporarily and permanently), and allergic and auto-immune reactions.
Especially with marijuana psychosis, you see it all the time on the streets with the "homeless," but these brain-damaged skunkers are simply ignored. These guys stink so badly from pot you can smell them before you can see them, and you would think watching them weave, get violent and attack objects and people would lead to some recognition how dangerous today's hyped up pot is. With any other product that is not politically correct (now they are even going after sunscreen), under the precautionary principle use would be banned because of the risk of harm. It's going to take 20 or 30 years for people to realize that Big Tobacco just changed to Big Marijuana. But by then the adverse physical and mental effects of marijuana will be widespread. And probably people will be so stupid then they won't be able to figure out the links. QUOTE: U.S. seeks $200 bln cut in China trade imbalance If China were to lower some tariffs, it would help with the trade imbalance, but probably not to the extent of $200 billion per year. Meanwhile, American consumers will continue to consume inexpensive Chinese manufactured goods. They'll stop buying from China when Vietnam and Indonesia catch up. That's how markets work. By then, China will have moved to the next level, and will be exporting electric cars. As for "halting all Chinese government support for advanced technologies", that's just silly. The U.S. government invests heavily in science and technology, and there's no reason for the Chinese not to do the same. It seems the U.S. is worried that they won't be able to compete as China emerges as a world economic power. As I've said before, China has already surpassed the United States economically and technologically, we just won't recognize it. And it's an advancing country, not one that is in the tailspin of economic and social decline.
A very good piece by Goldman:
How to Meet the Strategic Challenge Posed by China https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/how-to-meet-the-strategic-challenge-posed-by-china/ In particular, with the South China Sea it's already "Game Over." China has taken control of that area, including installation of military facilities and missile defense systems. They will not necessarily obstruct passage by other nations, but they have neutralized any ability to interfere with their trade routes there to reach other parts of the world under their Belt & Road policy. Another result of Obama being asleep for 8 years and our country going downhill during that period. Both China and Russia have tried to take advantage of our country's decline as much as they can.
Jim: Both China and Russia have tried to take advantage of our country's decline as much as they can.
China is an emerging power. Nothing will change that, and it's only reasonable that they have a place at the table. Russia is a weak country, but they have found a way to reverse engineer democracy, leaving Western nations vulnerable. The U.S. has long exerted global influence because it has articulated a vision of international alliances. Other nations have allied themselves with the Americans because of mutual interest and based on long-standing relationships founded in trust. The current administration's "America First" has repudiated the previous conception of "First among Equals", and left the U.S. much weaker than before.

I deal pretty frequently with foreign ladies and gents from both "shithole" and "non-shithole" countries for work. Can pretty definitively say we are more of a joke to all of them now then before. But feel free to keep living at imagination station. (And no, I neither liked nor voted for Obama, so I'm not just some misguided Dem . . )

Jim: China has already surpassed the United States economically and technologically, we just won't recognize it.
Wouldn't go that far. U.S. GDP is still nearly twice China's, and U.S. GDP per capita is many times that of China. And China's true economic production may not be as high as the official numbers. Technologically, China is still undergoing industrialization, while the U.S. is a fully post-industrial, service and information-based economy. China has a number of challenges just to maintain the gains they have made thus far, including rampant corruption, extensive pollution of air and water, as well as the social stresses inherent to industrialization. They are straining under their very success. The U.S. has huge advantages, including a highly educated and motivated workforce, a culture of entrepreneurship, vast resources, and an established infrastructure. On the other hand, the U.S. continues to run excessive and unnecessary fiscal deficits, having just cut taxes again. The current administration has threatened a trade war, and alienated its own natural allies. However, most of these problems can be resolved with a few good decisions. However, at this point, it seems unlikely, as reaching a consensus appears intractable. re KERRY WORKING TO UNDERMINE TRUMP ON IRAN DEAL
The link is a repeat of the Palestinian link. And the Vietnam link.
Funny how the Russia "collusion" investigation is premised in large part on allegations of violation of the Logan Act, and yet you now have Kerry doing it blatantly, and it is ignored. He should have been arrested for colluding with a hostile power and attempting to undermine U.S. policy. Of course, he did the same thing regarding Vietnam and he has yet to be tried for that either. "He should have been arrested for colluding with a hostile power and attempting to undermine U.S. policy."
Yeah. In 1971. "2 Tbsp Raw Unsweetened Cocoa A Day keeps memory loss away"
There have been a couple of studies about chocolate that tend to show chocolate is actually beneficial. Good, since I'm a chocoholic. My theory is that if the 100% cocoa is good that eating the milk chocolate with only 30% or so cocoa in it must be consumed at about 3.3 times the amount in the study. Just to be sure I round up to about 5 times as much. I'm not a fan of most studies on food since I suspect them of simply being designed to push a predetermined agenda. But I'm willing to make an exception this one time. [i]I suspect [studies] of simply being designed to push a predetermined agenda.[i/]
I'll bet you do. Why Are So Many Campus Feminists Anti-Male?
Because the ugly, Lesbian-led, Third Wave feminists convince attractive young women to become hideous caricatures of women, so as to keep those young converts for their own sexual pleasures! Once a pretty young woman becomes a hideous Gorgon, utterly repellent to normal young men, it's easy for the Lesbians to convince them that all men are beasts who only want them for sex, because "look how shallow men are in rejecting your (now hideous) appearence"! Women are mostly "lesbians" by choice and what a better way to make them "choose", than by first making them ugly, then pointing out that" shallow, unworthy men" reject them because they're ugly! Self-fulfilling prophecies! Yesterday's photo essay on what young women are doing to themselves in the name of "feminism" is so telling! QUOTE: Why Are So Many Campus Feminists Anti-Male? B48: Because the ugly ... a hideous Gorgon, utterly repellent Case in point. http://www.ebaumsworld.com/pictures/37-women-before-and-after-third-wave-feminism/85648010/

Trump meeting with Mueller.
I think PDJT should have his lawyer send Mueller a letter with the President's answers. Also send a copy to all the primary MSM. Then have the questions & answers put out via the @realdonaldtrump twitter account. OldFert: I think PDJT should have his lawyer send Mueller a letter with the President's answers.
There's nothing stopping the President from doing just that. Just make sure the answers are attested. Of course, like any citizen, the President may still be subject to subpoena to appear. Other presidents have defied a subpoena. Trump should not speak to Mueller. The Mueller investigation is a left wing political witch hunt intended to bring down a president. What the president should do is appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute Mueller's over reach and counter constitutional actions. Mueller has a very tarnished reputation of prosecutorial misconduct and should be exposed for what he is.
GoneWithTheWind: Other presidents have defied a subpoena.
Do you have an example in mind? The courts ruled that a civil case could move forward against a sitting president. Also, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously to uphold the subpoena of White House tape recordings. GoneWithTheWind: The Mueller investigation is a left wing political witch hunt intended to bring down a president. Looks like Trump's personal lawyer took a substantial sum of money from a Russian oligarch with close ties to the Kremlin. As we know the Russians were attempting to interfere in the U.S. election, this is something that certainly deserves scrutiny. Oh my, Americans continually becoming disinterested in Mueller's phony Russia probe.
