Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The idiot contractor who built our development planted Bradford Pear trees all up and down the road. The worst trees ever - the flowers stink horribly, they grow quickly in all the wrong directions, then break apart whenever there is a storm. Worse than silver maple for brittle wood.
I despise Bradford pears. They are not an attractive tree. They are hideously ugly. If I see one planted somewhere, I know someone was a moron and doesn't know shit from shinola about horticulture.
Yup.
I just posted the link to that article on my local Nextdoor.com site. Of course they hate me b/c I post facts not feel-good posts. But maybe it will get some local traction. Developers plant them because they grow fast and look decent....until they start snapping apart the first time a wind goes over 10 mph. Our city doesn't let them plant them anymore.

It is a pity that the women featured most prominently in today's media are either whiny, with their tedious harping and carping, pissing and moaning or sometimes lame, maudlin or neurotic. In short, an embarrassment to the women of the past. Having done genealogy for almost 40 years and encountering the stories of women, who followed the frontier west, I know that women are capable of true grit and heroism. "The war on milkshakes"
The article missed the mark. Reading the article you might believe that the tax on sugar is about healthy food or something. It is not. It is about taxes, pure and simple. The myths and misinformation about sugar made it easy to tax sugar. The politicians don't care what you consume. What they care about is millions and tens of millions in easy taxes. They don't care if they put soft drink companies out of business either. it is meaningless to them except that it might reduce the actual revenues vs the anticipated revenues. They do not care if soft drink companies are forced to put chemicals into their products in an attempt to avoid the taxes on sugar. Who cares what the citizen/voters drink as long as the taxes keep rolling in. Sugar bad; taxes are sweet! Politicians love anything they can tax. I can't tell you the number who are coming out on the side of legalizing marijuana only because other states are doing it and have upped their tax base. Let's legalize cocaine and heroin, too. They'll bring in more revenue.
"How soon can we start recording our dreams?"
How long before Facebook, or some other, starts selling your dreams to the highest bidder? There is a short story on that very thing in a recent issue of Stupefying Stories, only people liked getting paid for their dreams.
iGod would harvest them and turn them into salable products. Neil Gabler is a hard left professor of "Cinema" or something at my alma mater, U of Southern California. He is a constant embarrassment.
For those of us who had forgotten, Neal Gabler was the guy who wrote the whiny Atlantic piece about the 27% of Americans, including himself, who couldn't scrape up $400 to address an emergency, and it's all society's fault.
I had this thought: If Gabler were kidnapped and held for ransom, would any one or a group be willing to come up with the cash? My guess is "no".
I love the entire transgender athlete thing! My guess is that this will be what destroys the entire facade of transgender rights. Once women realize that there are no more women's sports the real rebellions will start. Judges, organizations, and governments will have to choose between all the women of American or the 1/10 of 1 percent who claim to be transgendered. Get the popcorn!
Yes, because only women really stand to lose here.
A man who "becomes" a woman and runs the marathon has an immediate physiological advantage over boring old regular female athletes. A woman who "becomes" a man and runs the marathon has an immediate physiological disadvantage over boring old regular male athletes. But then again, are there going to be "women-as-men" running in the male event I wonder? The first ones in any state or school will expect to be applauded for their courage, regardless of whether they are any good at it. After that well runs dry, I don't think many will women-as-men will compete.
There was some story about a high school wrestler defaulting in the state championships because he refused to wrestle a girl on Christian moral grounds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzPrg4jFjbA Nope. Both male-to-female and female-to-male transgender people are signing up to compete against biological women...which just happens to be the category where they have the competitive advantage.
Funny how that works. Especially when men's sports like rugby, baseball, track and others at various universities have been banned to assure Title IX gender balance between men and women's sports, the displaced male athletes just need to start showing up in a dress to try out for the women's sports and say they are transgender. If they don't let them on the team, even if they suck at the women's sport, then sue the university for discrimination.
Jonah Goldberg thinks he and Williamson and Stephens are getting this leftist love because he imagines the left seeing him/them as some truth-to-power guy, but it's more like useful idiot. It's not a newfound respect; it's just patronizing. The other team always loves someone willing to bash his own squad (look at all the fake love McCain has received over the years for being a "maverick"), and you'd think that Goldberg would have figured that out by now. Go ahead, Jonah, take it all in, and then ask yourself why the left is doing it.
