We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I have always steered those conversations toward "self-respect" instead, which I think is a healthier concept. Whatever wrong one has done, one's next act can always be in the direction of the honorable course.

Many years ago, a friend's son came home from school having had the "I'm special" class. To which friend did agree, somewhat. Her comment to me was that, while she didn't mind the teacher telling the students they were all special, she wished that the teacher had pointed out that everyone was special, and that included Mum, Dad, big brother, and even little sister. Oh, yes, she wanted one final proviso: special people picked up after themselves and helped with the chores.
