We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Unusual, eccentric, unexpected, bizarre, or grotesque presentations are fascinating to people. Curiosities, like strange deep-sea fishes, people with deformities, men in drag, effeminate gays, oddballs like Milton (in the movie, not the poet) and many other famous movie oddballs, etc. etc. People far outside the norm can be repellent or subject to morbid curiosity. Elephant Man and La Cage aux Folles was a huge hit.
Does Caitlin Jenner have a "disease"? I don't know and I don't care. I do know that human fantasy has no limits. (This is an old interview)
It is fascinating. Even children will pick up on these things and speak up often embarrassing adults. Why? Because as adults we get trained by society to not see these things and if we see them to say nothing. Even eye rolling is a no-no. That's why people comment on accents or odd physical characteristics or rings other piercings and bizarre tattoos or pink/blue hair or buzz cuts on women. BUT, it is exactly for that reason that they do these bizarre things. That is for the attention and the opportunity to be outraged over the attention.
There is no one over the age of 21 with pink hair, bizarre tattoos and piercings who is innocently the victim of unwanted attention. They did what they did to get that unwanted attention so they could angrily express how unwanted it is.
Had a nurse in the OR today that was 7 1/2 months pregnant. She had tattoo sleeves on both arms and I did wonder what type of mother she would be. Hopefully not one matching her appearance. Wonder if she thought about being a young mother when she was getting all those tattoos. I think she had a nose ring too. I'm too old to understand all this body modification stuff.
Nope. Each human bears responsibility for their own happiness. How does the saying go? Not my circus, not my monkeys. I'll pass on the spectacle. I'll not be attending any enforced parades.
This thread went in a different direction than what I expected. My first thought is that the freakshow is everywhere now, not just behind the curtain or locked in the basement. Then I thought how is the media any different from the old carney barker exploiting the oddities among us. Not sure that oddities is a word but you get my drift.
