Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

And, US Steel in Granite City IL.
It might be helpful to scan what Dennis Kucinich advocated (2007). Compare and contrast; he makes DJT seem very much a centrist. I can't think of any Dem, other than Dennis who is an authentic Dem. Compared to the DNC hierarchy, he is a rare breed. Alas, he is not the complete package, in that he doesn't advocate for Main Street. Despite reservations and being aware of the downside, I still admit to being exited about the rehabilitation of the steel industry. I don't understand why tariffs can't be a tweezer, as opposed to a jack hammer. http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Dennis_Kucinich_Free_Trade.htm Regarding the aptly named ProNouns: I'm actually none too bothered by the whole issue. I'm confident that it will fail anyway.
First, the demographic involved is microscopic and largely contained on university campuses; I often wonder if any of these activists ever figure out how much like a carnival sideshow they appear to the real world? Secondly, alas for their proponents, but ProNouns are counter-intuitive in terms of basic language grammar and idiom. Pronouns are generalized substitutes for more specific terms and expressions. You can make up nouns but you can't really make up pronouns, it's just not how language works. I sense that the whole ProNoun issue will ultimately founder on this linguistical inconsistency and impracticality. "3 Ways Cigar Shops Solve the World’s Problems
'Monster' 197-pound cougar captured by Washington state biologists" Ha! With those two items above following so closely, I read that second bullet as: "'Monster' 197-pound cigar captured by Washington state biologists" You mean that Washington state biologists captured Oprah??? Or isn't she the 197 pound cougar that they were talking about?

Becoming? Past tense, surely? IT'S TIME FOR SOCIALISM: LET'S NATIONALIZE THE WASHINGTON POST
Sorry to inform you, but the CIA beat everybody to it! After all, they had to do something with all those ill-gotten drug trafficking gains! And you can only buy Adam Schiff, as well as Bill, Hill and Chelsea, one time! Respectfully disagree. In our perfect world, the Clintons can be bribed an infinite number of times by an infinite number of people.
It is a little like saying a hooker can only be done once. Peace brother. Drug trafficking gains??? You really believe that or just trolling?
Or I'm smart enough to recognize bullshit when I see it.
So I'm sitting here watching FOX news and an ad comes on for earrings (magicbax). And of course they are talking about how pretty they are. Seriously are earrings pretty? Many are bizarre and all are silly. Why are we always extorted into saying "yeah they look nice"?
I feel the same about lipstick, eyeliner (or whatever it is called) and fake nails. In fact fake nails are a huge turnoff and I always picture the witch in those scary movies. I once worked with a lady that had a ring on every finger of both hands and it was the silliest thing I ever saw. What is it with all this bling? Fake nails. Usually verrrry long. I've often wondered about the wearer's butt-wiping hygiene.
I can tick off all nine of those and add a tenth!
I live in Australia! Substitute Texan for Canadian and I can get all nine.

re Wilbur Ross: Why We Imposed the Metal Tariffs
President Trump announced Thursday that he is imposing tariffs of 25% on steel imports and 10% on aluminum imports, with exemptions for Canada and Mexico. Unless there are strict quotas for Canada and Mexico, Chinese steel will simply find its way to US through those countries and they will reap a windfall at our expense. Tariffs that save jobs in the steel industry mean higher steel prices, which in turn means fewer sales of American steel products around the world and losses of far more jobs than are saved. Thomas Sowell

That is what they would have you believe. And yet everyone of our trading partners have tariffs on American goods. Hmmmm! What is wrong then with that theory that the economists and globalists love to spout? If it were true the whole trade thing would have collapsed years ago, even decades ago. Any country can decide to fight a trade war but why would they? The purpose of it would be to bluff us into ending the tariff but not to end trade. So if you treat it like the bluff that it is they will have to come back to trade. The U.S. represents a bigger market to our trading partners than all the other trading partners do put together. China sells us about half a trillion dollars worth of goods every year. Do you really think they want a trade war? After the bluffing and posturing is over they have no choice but to trade on our rules. They have much more to lose than we do. I believe that when Trump exempted Canadian steel he meant Canadian steel.
But steel is steel JJM. When it hits our border, how will we be able to determine the country of origin?
They will find it the same way they have been finding Chinese transshipments from other Asian countries such as S Korea, or other transshipments by China to N Korea. Why risk loosing all tariff exemptions for getting caught once. The actual product cost increases are about 1% so a $60,000 Escalade will cost about $600 more. I think the long game for the Trump administration is to replace more and more of the income taxes we pay with tariffs. Think of it as a substitution of income taxes for consumption taxes that are focuses on increasing the cost of imported goods. Conservatives have pushed this idea for years and Trump may get this done through the back door.
"When it hits our border, how will we be able to determine the country of origin?"
That's not my problem. Full disclosure: I'm Canadian. I did find a piece on the tariff exemptions and both countries were notified that their exemptions would disappear immediately if they again exported that steel or aluminum to the US. A Chinese billionaire already had 5 billion dollars of aluminum warehoused in Mexico...not going to work out for him now. I still think NAFTA if finished within a year because it was a free trade deal and not a fair trade deal. Canada and Mexico became trade funnels for everyone trying to get stuff into the US...nice deal for them but poor deal for us.

Tex-Mex border.
I was recently in El Paso, Texas. Saw a lot of cars with Chihuahua, Mexico license plates when I was at a shopping center. I've wondered for a long time: If folks from Mexico can come over to shop, why pay a coyote to smuggle them across when, it seems, one could just come over to shop and then catch the next Greyhound or Trailways north? Rio Grande Valley
More to the point is that all illegal traffic across the Southern border is controlled by the cartels. A big change from 10 years ago. Smuggling, drugs, "immigrants", or other, is all controlled and financially rewarding to the Mexican drug Cartels. They send armed men into the US to enforce their control. The Cartels got a lot of the guns they used from the Obama administration via the BATFE flawed, or fake, gun tracking operation. Interesting that the BATFE couldn't track the weapons once they crossed the border, but the Obama admin sure did use the guns crossing the border to push their lawful-citizen-disarmament policy goals. Now we see Democrats actively working to protect the drug cartel profits. Maybe it's pay off for legalizing weed which cut into the cartel income? I am glad that the Trump administration is finally thinking about changing our failed drug policy and is considering executing drug dealers. That would make a big difference in turning around the rampant drug addiction situation in our country. We only have to look at how China, Singapore and other Asian countries ended the scourge of drugs.
Quite a change from the Obama administration, which put hundreds of these murderers back on the streets on the grounds that drug pushing is a "victimless crime." Now we have a drug and fatal overdose situation this country has never seen before. Those of us who have raised sons have known for years that schools favor girls. They are designed by women for girls. Though most of the teachers are female, most do like or even prefer boys. It's not about affection, but values. They think the most important quality that should be taught is conscientiousness. That's certainly a good one, and helps make the world go 'round, but it's not the only valuable item.
The girls who have grown up in this deeply protected environment become furious upon reaching adulthood and realising that real life is played by different rules. Those with flexibility adjust, incorporate the new rules, and succeed. The others can spend years in resentment at how unfair it all is and attempting to changing everything back to the days when it was all about their feelings. For the boys, a lot have already been destroyed by then. Some boys learn early that there is more than one way to skin a cat and that school rules are only part of the picture. Those lads tend to succeed on all fronts going forward. Some of them are nice moral people and some are cads, but that is a separate issue, not intrinsic to their maleness. I agree but with one caveat. I don't think the teachers went into it intending to harm or discriminate against the boys. The problem is that prepubescent boys are a whole lot more trouble in a desk and rules school environment than prepubescent girls are. The girls thrive on pleasing the teacher and they are better equipped to write and draw. What the boys need at this age is to be outside doing physical things and they rebel against the school environment.
After puberty the girls too become more troublesome but still are comfortable in the desk/rules/social environment and the boys have become "men". They generally still have the mind and immaturity of boys but they are physically men, ready or not. At this point the teachers will have trouble controlling them unless their parents have "domesticated" them. This requires two parents and in today's society that is often not the case. This isn't directly the fault of the teachers but rather the fault of the entire school system and philosophy. It is unlikely that we will change the schools to better accommodate boys so it is unlikely that anything will change. Those boys with good parents or with one very strong parent will have an advantage. Those boys that do not have strong parents will have a disadvantage in life. Back in the day, offsprings attended a school to which almost the entire student body commuted rather than walked. I was wont to suggest that the first order of the day should be having all the student run around the school ten times, outside, and then classes should commence.
Backer in the day, a very bright nephew was wont to finish his desk work very quickly. His teacher had a fairly fearsome jigsaw set up in the back, so he (and others who likewise finished quickly) were allowed to go there and try to sort it out. He loved this. |
