Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

My Dad's advice to his kids wasn't "Follow your passions," it was "Be one of the people who makes the world work."
Mike Rowe has a good one, too. "Take your passion with you."
When our offsprings entered high school, our expectations were than they would graduate from Grade 12 and then follow a career path which would lead to a decent career. We got a lot of "I would like to be an actor", to which our response was "and how do you propose to feed yourself?". All did very well academically, though one did manage to combine accounting and drama en route to a degree.
Had they gone the trades route, we would have been just as pleased. To be blunt, if one can't earn a decent living after taking post-secondary training, then why do that? Do remember, back in 2000, when took aged P to England where a cousin was celebrating 60th wedding anniversary. Met up with a cousin's offspring who had just graduated with - as I recall - a degree in English and Philosophy. Gave congrats and then asked the logical question "and how can you keep yourself with this degree?". Apparently parents had had same query, but kid figured could find something; in meantime had thoroughly enjoyed courses. Last I heard, was working for an on-line publisher, but that's some years ago. Have every expectation this kid will land on feet; not so sure for others obtaining degrees these days which would lower one's value in the marketplace. A globalist claims that "The main reason for the loss of US steel jobs is a huge increase in worker productivity, not imports"
He misses the point and proves the dishonesty of the globalists. The main reason we need to encourage more domestic steel production is for strategic national defense reasons. Also to reduce the trade deficit and to reverse the international trend for other countries to take advantage of our country. And of course while it is great that steel mills have gotten more efficient and require fewer workers it still holds true that more steel being produced here means more jobs here. The globalists like it just the way it is. The make products in cheap labor low regulation companies and sell those products into the worlds biggest market with huge profits. Why should they want this to change. They control our congress and our government through open and indirect bribes and our congress and government is not on our side on this issue. They have been selling us down the river for decades and all our politicians retire as millionaires. Why leftists hate Trump? Don’t lefties hate everything? They seem to always be in a constant state of rage about something. They hate America. Trump loves America. That’s all they need to know.
Well stated and oh so true.
The globalists like it just the way it is.They control our congress and our government...That is for damn sure. We, the subjects have accepted that as the way the world turns.Sadly.Some how,we still have one of the best places in the world to live.It just that it could be so much better with a government that didn't have to answer to the elite few.Anyway have a good one and be thankful. The main reason for the loss of US steel jobs is a huge increase in worker productivity, not imports, and the jobs aren’t coming back
More blather from a blindered ECONOMIST! (And a #Nevertrumper, I'll wager). He conveniently overlooks the decline in the number of enterprises located in the US, engaged in steel and focuses ONLY on productivity and workers! Never mind about companies actually located here in the US which can produce steel that can be readily monitored for quality. The US military and infrastructure for the past 30 years has been reliant upon foreign steel, much of which is of uncertain quality and now the military and infrastructure seem to paying for that in terms of unreliability of the steel in place. If you want to rebuild both the military and the infrastructure, it makes sense to re-focus steel production in the US for reasons of quality concerns! CONNECT THE DOTS, people! TRUMP is much smarter than you ever imagined! Sorry, but allowing China and other nations to dump steel below the real cost of making it is WRONG and should not be ignored. Period.
Also, Trump is right, it is in our national security interest to be able to produce our own steel and aluminum. I don't want to rely on China to supply our military with raw materials...do YOU? As Secretary Ross pointed out this tariff will increase the cost of a can of soup by less than 1 cent, the cost of a car by 1%. These are not outrageous numbers. FYI, it was pointed out elsewhere that we have PLENTY of tariffs on farm goods coming into this country. Nobody seems to be talking about those...why is it only bad when we have tariffs for steel and aluminum? Also, we have allowed countries to slap tariffs on our goods for YEARS with no pushback at all. Completely unfair playing field. Trade is not free or fair right now. Bring on the tariffs. It's been a long time coming. And not the wimpy style of tariffs we saw with Bush...real, effective tariffs for a long period of time until trade partners play by the rules. I wonder if you would feel the same way if 0bama had imposed tariffs on the American people?
Would that have been okay? Heavy tariffs have been in place on American goods sold overseas for years. I don't recall you complaining about that. China puts a 20% tariff on some of our goods. India puts a 1oo% tariff on our goods. The EU has various tariffs between 10% and 20%. Almost every country we (free) trade with also throws up additional barriers to American goods. We have been in a tariff war for 50 years but our leaders and the MSM don't tell us so it is easy to say "WE" are starting a tariff war as long as we kep the masses ignorant of the truth.
All products made overseas and sold in this country have an unseen cost that all Americans must pay. While you can claim that cheap overseas goods are good for consumers in fact the opposite it true. Every job that is sent overseas means income taxes not paid into states and the federal government. The rest of us have to make up that lost revenue. Ditto for SS and Medicaid taxes. Every job taken from our country by the globalist takes money from our governments, our retirements and our health care. In return we get shoddy cheap goods at a lower price. Who gets the better bargain? And in an example of privilege, two Capital police officers ran across open ground under 7.62 mm rifle fire, with dinky handguns.
But in Parkland, the theory is who would want to confront someone with an 5.56 mm AR-15 with a handgun, in a school, with halls, walls, and corners. re “Follow your dreams”
They just don't like it because it was Oprah who said it. Of course people should pursue their passions. It doesn't mean all will succeed, but that's what made America great. Read/listen to the Mike Rowe column. He brings up two great points: What if what you're passionate about is useless, and what if you suck at what you're passionate about?
If you're passionate about dressing up as a rainbow unicorn and dancing through the streets, fine, but don't think the world owes you a living in exchange for you doing it. I could be passionate about horse racing, but at over six feet tall and 200 pounds I'm never going to be a winning jockey. The world is changed by people who are passionate about what they do, not by those who do what they're passionate about. I followed my dreams and it worked out pretty good, ending up in a secure retirement of 20+ years so far, although that was never what I dreamt of. Having grown up during the depression and WW2, my dreams were about what was possible for me, wholly practical in nature. None of that dancing unicorn stuff.
I agree with Mike Rowe on this point.
But I follow my dreams. I just don't make these dreams the be-all-to-end-all point of my vocation. If the dreams yield results which make money, great. If they just make me happier, all the better. Intersectionality is simply a way for the Left to rank "victim" status.
"Following your dream" isn't bad advice as long as you fit your dream to reality. If you're passionate about dressing up as a rainbow unicorn and dancing through the streets, keep in mind that Disney hires people to dress up as cartoon characters and meet-and-greet visitors but the pay is not very good. So there's a trade-off if you're willing to make it. What's your dream worth?
"Why Trump Is So Hated by Leftists."
He won. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less. He won. Well, there IS "Hillary LOST" and the laughing and grinning that accompanies.
re From Cricket Protein to Super Sugar, the Israeli Food Tech Scene Is Booming - Start Up Nation takes on dinner
Last year when we were in San Francisco, there was an Israeli staying at the same B&B as we were. He was part of a start up that . . . IIRC . . . was farming a type of algae and turning it into a high protein flour. Anyhow he was very pleasant as he told us about their high tech farming operation, how they saved and recycled virtually everything. I don't remember a lot of the details because he lost me when he expounded on how their fledgling business was needed due to climate change. OTOH I am sure that was an important selling point as he was headed off to speak to a group of potential investors, his reason for being in SF. Trudeau makes babies sound more like lab rats than scientists.
We do have a lot to learn from history. For instance, the last time states seceded from the union, what happened? The president sent enormous armies into those states and killed enough people to drag them back into the union against their will. It set the precedent that states couldn't secede. And that president is almost always hailed as a wonderful statesman who saved the union.
So if California secedes, and Trump's army kills enough of the California "secesh rabble", will he get his own face on Mt. Rushmore and be hailed by the intelligentsia as a hero? Bad link:
