Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Sunday, March 4. 2018An American place
All filling their baskets with their preferred products of American abundance at reasonable prices and in high volume. It's a kick to go for staples, but 2-3 times per year is enough for me. Mrs. BD gives me a list, but I do whatever I want. Heard at the cheese place there, a mom to a little girl: "Honey, let's get Dad some good cheeses. He loves cheese. He's like a mouse." Of course I make some impulse buys, like their Kerry Gold Irish cheese. Good stuff, like cheddar but better than cheddar. And a pack of their amazing ribeyes of course. $50 for a 5-pack of thick and fatty ribeyes? Since Mrs. BD and I share one ribeye for a supper, that's a $5 delicious and protein-packed supper for this couple which lifts weights and exercises daily. If you exercise hard, you need that nutritional fat. Nothing to do with that silly cholesterol nonsense. Word to the wise: their house brand (Kirkland) extra virgin olive oil is as good as anything anywhere.

Every 5-6 months!! I go every other week. Of course we still have a college kid and a high school kid in the house, so battalion size packaging is useful. We save enough money on bath tissue a year to pay the membership fee. Kirkland bacon is the best. how they can sell a large pizza for 10 bucks is beyond me. Their hot dog and a drink for $1.50 ain't half bad either. Think I will go tomorrow.
I go minimum of once every two weeks, sometimes I go just because I feel like getting out and being around people. The parking lot is always jammed (even though they just recently expanded it) and the lines at the cashiers are atrocious but it doesn't bother me because I find it uplifting to be in the midst of such bounty. Costco is one of the things that makes me pray that the American way of life never comes to an end....and I'm a Canadian.
If I could only figure out how to get out of there for under 200 bucks. If there is another Costco close, try that. I went to one for 16 years, more crowded every year. Tried another store in the opposite direction, newer, less crowded, friendlier staff.
My family speaks of the "burn rate" at Cosco-- how much money per hour you'll go through while you're in there.
The nearest Costco is an hour and a half away, we have to be content with Sam’s Club, a poor substitute. I was in a Costco one time on a visitors badge that they were very reluctant to issue, but I would not pay the membership fee for a single looking visit. They are definitely an upgrade from Sam’s, although the Sam’s rotisserie chicken is amazingly delicious and a fantastic value.
You’re lucky, Dan. Here in Rapid City, to get to a Costco we’d have to drive 350mi east to Sioux Falls or roughly the same distance up to Billings. I’d go to Billings; no sales tax there and a more scenic drive. We’ve been told there is a possibility of an opening here but so far, no luck. And yes, Sam’s Club is a distant second to Costco. Folks travel from as far away as the Nebraska Panhandle, Pierre (SD state capital) and Gillette, WY to shop in Rapid. I cannot understand what Costco mgmt are waiting for. BTW, BD, WalMart and Safeway sell California Arbequina EVOO and it’s great. Cheerio chuck
I am a big Costco fan and lucky to have one nearby. Use it regularly. Unfortunately it is not one that carries wine and liquor. I'd get a big kick out of popping corks from Kirkland wines.
Kerry Gold is pleasant, my grocer carries it.
But you want a real taste? Get Old Croc extra sharp. You can shave with that, it's great. Kerry gold butter is worth the higher price. But I too avoid Costco and find what I want where the prices are lower.
Costco's Kirkland Signature wines are often a very, very good deal.
Then inside story on Kirkland olive oil and wines.
The wines: Costco is the biggest purchaser of high quality wines in the U.S. Whenever a wine producer offers a discount, Costco delivers that full amount to the buyer. The Tuscan grown olive oil was held back for a couple years until Costco got the consistent high quality that it demanded. Then it sells it for a fraction of other high quality olive oils. It's a fine company for the buyers. BTW, Sams Club's owner just died in his 90's. I believe he consulted with the owners of Costco when they were starting out. When he heard that a close friend of his (and a dear friend of mine) was remarrying after a nasty divorce, Sam offered his private jet to honeymoon in Paris. I watch Baskets, on FX, religiously. I find it hilarious. If they are not talking about Costco you will consistently see Kirkland brand products in the background.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp1xPuE6R_4 I don't care for Costco. Everything is over priced and most of what I might want in a store is not there. Besides I hate the idea of and do not understand paying to be a member. I am a member because my wife wants to be a member because her dad was a member. So we go there sometimes but mostly at noon so I can have a slice of pizza.
I know people who go there to eat the free samples given out. But years ago I vowed never to eat free crap being handed out just as I don't eat certain food at picnics. I also don't eat street tacos or stuff from food vendor trucks. I went to my (Aurora, CO) Costco Saturday morning too, at ten o'clock. It was packed. I bought only a two pound bag of whole bean coffee (New Mexico Piñon) and was in and out in ten minutes. They had the checkout lines fully staffed which was a very nice surprise.
No Costco nearby. Closest are Charleston, SC and Jacksonville, FL. Both about equidistant but too far for regular purchases.
I guess I'll have to check their online presence. |
