We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

"I won't vote for this judge because he is white"
This is the inevitable result of identity politics. Imagine that we did this with the NFL or the NBA.
Dr. King: don't judge a man by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.
Chuck Schumer: don't judge a man by the content of his character, but by the color of his of his skin.
I bet that everyone who admires King is taking Schumer to task. I will just sit here and wait for the outrage on MSNBC and CNN.
"Believing that not all judges should be white is not racism."
If whites perceive this as discrimination it is just their own over-sensitivity, not anything caused by the law. --Justice Henry Billings Brown, Plessy v. Ferguson (paraphrased).
And a Straw man argues with a straw man... Very appropriate.
Of course all judges shouldn't be white/black/hispanic/male/female. Of course these opportunities should be open to all and everyone should see and know that no one group is being discriminated against or in favor. But then that is the point. You cannot have quotas. You cannot say 1 Supreme court judge should be black, 1 Indian, 3 female, etc. It is the exact opposite of non-discrimination. We are a diverse nation, our judges, police, firemen, sports teams, professions, educators, every organization should reflect that. It should happen naturally and as a result of ability and appropriateness. The best way to do this is to make sure that all children get a good education regardless of race/gender. Make sure that when our children, all our children, graduate that they are qualified to be hired/appointed to these positions.
The solution is not to mandate equal representation regardless of ability but to mandate equal education that will insure that graduates are able and ready to take on these jobs. This may not be easy for many reasons but it should be our goal unhindered by racism/sexism EVEN when that racism/sexism purports to be intended to create equality or the illusion of equality. our goal should be to aim higher for everyone not bring down the high achievers to the level of those who are under achievers.
If whites quit attending NFL or NBA games there wouldn't be an NFL or NBA. Sounds like a great idea to me.
re More German Cities Ban Refugees From Arriving
If the cities quit taking refugees, then where will Merkel's migrants settle? Will the German Feds force the issue or will they build camps in rural areas?
Btw, this was rich:
Merkel says Germany has ‘no-go areas;’ gov’t won’t say where
Interior Ministry spokesman Johannes Dimroth likewise declined to identify no-go areas, saying security was a matter for local not federal authorities.

100 years ago G K Chesterton wrote a response to critics who wanted to ban fairy tales. He showed why they are essential in childhood.
There's nothing new under the sun, but the opposition to sanity does seem to be getting stronger lately.
CS Lewis echoed Chesterton on that. “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. . . Let there be wicked kings and beheadings, battles and dungeons, giants and dragons, and let villains be soundly killed at the end of the book."
Rape ain't the half of it. Murder, war, abandonment, enthrallment, encounters with the dead, betrayal...
As Bruno Bettelheim said, fantasy has its uses. You can't just replace the subject-matter of kids' stories with anything you think is more appropriate or PC. The reason kids play with tin soldiers is that it's no fun playing with tin pacifists.
"The reason kids play with tin soldiers is that it's no fun playing with tin pacifists."

The rest of the boring old everyday English-speaking world will just go on merrily using he, she, it and they.
The Tet Offensive Was Not About Americans.
The South Vietnamese role in the fighting, though, is all too often missing from the story. In actuality, ARVN did the bulk of the fighting in Hue, losing 357 in battle and killing 2,642 N.V.A. and Vietcong fighters. It was their city, their capital, their battle. The struggle for Hue during Tet 1968 was arguably ARVN’s greatest victory of the war — a victory too often denied its proper place in history. It took the NYT 50 years to get it right. Walter Cronkite rolls over in his grave.
The fighting in Hue, and the wider Tet offensive, is best understood in a Vietnamese context. The attacks were not, strictly speaking, aimed at American forces; they were aimed militarily at ARVN, and psychologically at the South Vietnamese national will. The American military fought gallantly as part of Tet, from Saigon in the south to Khe Sanh in the north. But, as in Hue, the bulk of the Tet fighting fell to ARVN, with South Vietnamese forces suffering two-thirds of the estimated 12,000 allied casualties in the overall campaign.
Within this broader context, Tet was even more of a spectacular failure for the North Vietnamese on all levels. The Communists had long contended that ARVN was a puppet force that would collapse when faced with real military pressure. But ARVN fought hard and well during Tet, besting the Communists at every turn. Making matters much worse for Hanoi, the South Vietnamese had not risen up in support of the North even though the vicious fighting left 600,000 of them refugees. With their Tet plan in tatters, the Communists were left to rethink their war effort, and their vision of what South Vietnam really was.
Within the broader context of the Vietnam War, more than anything else Tet indicated South Vietnam’s resilience and military competency after nearly 14 years of conflict. While ARVN usually receives little notice in the West, and is usually dismissed as doomed to failure, the Tet experience hints at something deeper and different — a difference reflected in some perhaps startling numbers.
Neither Ken Burns or NPR will ever get it right...cultural Marxists in the arts and political Marxists in politics insured the ARVN would fail by cutting off first the truth and then military support. They committed treason and are proud of it.
Treason against their country, maybe; but not their tribe. That loyalty persists.
