Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The lost New York: Photographs from the 1930s reveal how New Yorkers used to live before their streets and homes were torn down for new construction

Very cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIPnMB_KOsM&feature=youtu.be Good one, thanks for sharing. Did you notice the zeppelin flying in the background behind the seated workers? Cool!
Yes I did! That was very cool.
However, the other part of that loop gave me the whim-whams, watching those iron workers standing on those I-beams. Looking at the commuters crossing Penn Station, they are moving more slowly than people would today, even on a weekend day.
The national argument about guns is NOT about deaths or shootings. It is about the eventual goal of confiscation and the overturning of the 2nd amendment. Most gun deaths are suicides. No one is seriously talking about stopping suicides and if they did the discussion would revolve around mental health and not a gun or a pill that is used to commit suicide. The second biggest number of gun deaths occurs in about half a dozen cities where gangs, mostly black gangs, shot each other and often bystanders. Almost nothing is done in those places that would be effective to stop this. The last time something was done it was done in NY City by Giuliani and the ACLU bent over backwards to end it. That was stop and frisk. One wonders if they were serious about ending gun deaths why common sense efforts like stop and frisk should not be allowed.
Almost all the deaths by guns; the bad deaths where a bad guy shoots someone and the good deaths where a policeman or a home owner shoots someone to protect lives, are done with handguns not rifles. Very few deaths are the result of rifles and of these even fewer are the result of AR15's or what is commonly called Assault rifles. So ask yourself why the knee jerks within seconds of a shooting demand that AR15s be banned? Why not ban handguns in the hands of gang members and felons??? Oh yeah that's already illegal and yet is the single largest source of preventable gun homicides. So why go after AR15s? Why go after AR15s? The simple answer is this is a backdoor effort to end private gun ownership and subvert the 2nd amendment. The goal is to intimidate legal and honest gun owners out of their guns. To make it impossible for the honest gun owners to thread that needle of laws and regulations such that he just gives up his guns. They will do this for one simple reason: They are honest and law abiding and fear the law. The gang banger and felon will not! Mass shooters and school shooters will not! This isn't aimed at them. This is about a cabal of mostly far left and communist associated and funded anti-gun activists who want to overturn the 2nd amendment. They do NOT want to make the world or the U.S. safer. they know it won't be safer if they take away guns from honest people. They have a different goal and it does not involve constitutional rights. This is an all out assault on our civil rights mostly funded by communist groups and people foor the purpose of creating an unarmed America; a country of serfs and not citizens. Why? The mental health part is even questionable. Not a clear definition. Don't believe Life starts at conception? I'd say your crazy. Willing to pay premium price for something that generically could be had for 50% less? Sounds crazy to me.
Using reliable energy to make less reliable energy in the name of "saving" something? Nuts. The list of possibilities is endless. I think it is a quote from "Red Dawn": Do you beat your pig because the fox got into the chickens? How am I/we more secure because you take away my right (of self defense) because someone else did something that had nothing to do with me? "How am I/we more secure because you take away my right (of self defense) because someone else did something that had nothing to do with me?"
plz dont mistake the actions of govt to spring from any manner of motive other than to control the lumpenproletariat. On either side of the aisle. Gotta a kick outta the dog picture, put in mind of this tune..

I am concerned also about the risk of China. Russia still tops China as a military threat (though I doubt that actual military conflict is likely), but consider this: Supercomputers are in many ways the pinnacle of cutting edge technology. There is a regular survey of the current top machines, and for many years, US dominated the list, with some European nations also there but with a lot of US technology. It's a horse race, with new or upgraded machines continuously jockeying for the top. A few years back, the US became concerned and cut off the sale of very high end processors to China. Within about two years they had developed their own and built the world's fastest computer. They are now in the #1 spot, as well as several of the others. IN TWO YEARS they produced the homegrown infrastructure and technology to top the US and Europe, something we've perfecting for decades. That's pretty close to unbelievable, the design, manufacturing and development of such a machine is something that very few countries could even consider. They have just launched a satellite that, during a 10 minute window as it passes over China, can supposedly exchange encryption using quantum entangled photons. Ouch, this is science fiction level stuff. "Three Quarters Of Young Americans Couldn’t Join The Military If They Wanted To"
Not all that bad given we are in the centennial of the ending of war where millions died over the hubris and greed of inbred European aristocrats. Most of which were related. It was good that so many claimants to the thrones were killed as a result and many of the others realized they'd better give up their claim or suffer the same fate. I'm sort of glad there's not a computer searchable database of gun owners.
RE Liberals Enraged After Obama Praises Billy Graham on Twitter
is this a response from the Left or a few drunk morons who live in Twitter RE: Officials Identify More Rotherham Victims, Number Up to 1,510
Coming to a United States near you......... Response to why go to Church:
Why attend church: because God the Father, the Creator of the universe, demands it, for our benefit. Attending a Catholic Mass weekly is mandatory (it's a mortal (very serious) sin to miss Mass without good cause. During the Mass the community, repeats or makes present the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. Then, during Communion, the faithful physical unite themselves with the physical, Incarnate (literally in the Flesh) Jesus. It's a beautiful opportunity for Christians to join together and celebrate together God's divine mercy. It's important because having a Father/child, personal, relationship with God requires spending time with God. It's important to attend Mass with others, because the Church is a community, and communities are a group, not individuals. Bishop Robert Barron, at Word on Fire, former Presbyterian minister Scott Hahn, and Ed Sri all have excellent resources that explain the Biblical basis of the Mass, what's in the Mass and why Catholics believe about the Mass what they do, and why attending Mass is so valuable. The reasons that many young people couldn't qualify for the armed forces may indeed start with obesity and medical conditions, but there is some sleight of hand in that study. Over 20%* of the population 17-24 don't qualify because they are too young to have finished highschool yet. I don't think those should be counted.
*Assuming an October cutoff for starting school, plus some who were held out their first year, leading to graduation at 19. So it may be closer to 25% |
