We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I have to say that I'm not feeling overwhelmed by the holidays. This year I observed the Advent season for the first time in my life. I tried to have a mentality of waiting and preparing myself and made an effort to not get consumed with the secular frenzy of Christmas.
What I've noticed is that it's not just good for your spiritual health, but your mental health too. It feels good knowing that, rather than Christmas being over and nothing but a long, cold winter ahead, Christmas has only just begun. I'm taking my family to look at Christmas lights tomorrow night and still listening to Christmas songs. I'm wearing a Christmas tie to church this Sunday.
For those who've never observed the liturgical calendar I recommend it. Those old guys who wrote all the rules knew what they were talking about.
You know that a truck this overloaded always gets a flat tire and they have to unload everything to get to the spare. At least that's how it seems to happen to the various trucks and cars I see by the side of the road with all the contents of the trunk strewn by the highway as they rummaged deeply for the spare.
For what it's worth, trucks in the last 20 years or so have taken a bigger toll on highway deaths and carnage. Their greater numbers and higher speeds coupled with their very long braking distances are a hazard to all drivers. The monitoring you refer to is to assure that drivers aren't driving extra long hours and then falling asleep at the wheel. The public has a right to safe highways.
