Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Hilarious to watch CNN this morning going on about how awful it is that the US is condemning the UN over its condemnation of the US - these countries are just expressing their opinion and what's wrong with that? It's apparently only the US that's not allowed to express an opinion. Under its current management, at any rate.
A very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the contributors to this wonderful site. So much to learn, so little time, but this place is a great thwack on the side of the head. Stay safe.
I noted that I had to do a George Will...who?...as I have dropped most professional, overly-paid pundits from my list of have-to- hear/read. MF is much more sane, diverse, complex and ultimately satisfying. Mr. Will and his ken need to get out more. Or read Maggie's. Maggie’s has been my first stop in the morning, going on eight years now. Great blog. Thank you very much for keeping it going. Merry Christmas!
Ditto! Great site, especially love BD's morning links and lectionary.
"more biz means more work"--but now the geniuses are deciding that work is counterproductive in a post-scarcity society. Even a post-scarcity society in which the GOP cruelly ignores the plight of the poor. I'm dizzy.
Yep. Lower biz taxes and you get more biz which means more work.
Nope. Not even close. There isn't a statistic that supports such a baseless assumption. Here's a more realistic scenario, thanks primarily to rightists*: 1. Create a system in which corporations write law and the voter has no influence. 2. Extort nation by offshoring profits. 3. Rather than outlawing such things, nation capitulates. 4. Rightists compound this zero sum problem, buy in completely, cite market forces that simply do not exist. 5. DC honors its corporate donor class and sells the nation on "reform" that changes virtually nothing, kicking a percent or two back to a slim minority of a beleaguered worker class, what remains of it. 6. Not a dime is cut from the budget, deficit, or debt. Debt rises. 7. Nation goes into even greater personal hock too as The Magic Christmas of 2017 approaches. Rightists cheer. *Faux conservatives, the neo-Neoconned Boomer Right, out spending their kid's inheritance, and a nation's.
Good.
You cut back on the rhetorical flourishes and actually made a little sense. Could use a little work on the smugness though. Are you back from a morning of television opinion, pup? Honestly, I can't say a substantive take on anything can compete with all that flash and bullshit. Just saying.
Well said Meh,, you are right on IMO.'
''And the beat goes on and on'' >corporate donor class and their lobbyist He he he... Leave it to lefties and the clueless (often one in the same) to cling to the notion that business taxes are not part of the cost of doing business, that corporations pay taxes, and that tax rates have no effect on behavior.
That old saw again. The business cost argument is so obvious not a person alive doesn't get it. What's only slightly less obvious is that rightists haven't a clue how things really work.
Give them an itemized list on it and they still defer to their cognitive bias replying to it. Was extorting the public part of the Income Tax Law of 1776, mudbug, or was it the small print slipped in when the Founders wrote the measures in the Federalist Papers to create casino banking? I hear a lot of them said it was perfectly fine to gamble as long as you euphemistically call it investing and don't actually build any gambling halls yourself. And then they went out and got some chicks to do blow off of. I don't believe the founding fathers would agree with the amount of influence money has on the system that they crafted.Do you?
A lot of people think money has way too much influence on our government, left and right.
And again, what's your solution?
You come on here - day after day - and do nothing but bitch. Offer a solution, or shut up. Then there was that time you gave yourself cancer smoking and slammed anyone who pointed out the warning labels.
You mewling child. Really good work you're doing on making friends and influencing people!
I'd given up on my goal of providing my judging betters with material they somehow couldn't come up with on their own, Sam. All the more when they despise so much of it.
They're already brilliant; just ask them. Tax "reform" simply wasn't. Look into it.
