We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
None of these MEN were multicultural in the least. Ike could use the word “Crusade” with irony or guilt because they all believed in the same things.
To a man, they believed they were better than the Nazis, the Italian Fascists, the worthless French collaborators, the Japanese, and our disgusting Russian allies. Only our Anglosphere allies would have qualified as equal in their minds.
They probably even looked down upon the Ghurkas, Indian troops, and American Negro units until they proved themselves in the Italian campaign.
Our present day media would have reported D-Day as a bloody boondoggle. Dead Americans on the beach and French civilians killed by allied bombs would have been on the front-page of the NYTimes. Ike would have spent the rest of 1944 conducting investigations instead of crushing Germany.
There is an excellent post/article about this at one of the sites I discovered here at Maggie's Farm (you linked to them sometime ago). The Shelf. www.randomshelf.blogspot.com. I also googled and found several other sites with facts and images of documents and maps- check Eisenhowers Presidential papers site.
Having lived many years abroad, and grown to love those foreign countries and some of their people, I don't just think but I know from field work that our country is better. And we Americans are better to the extent that we rise above tribal loyalties, country of origin, and just love America best. No African Americans, no Hispanic Americans, no WASP Americans, no Irish Catholic Americans, just plain Americans. We may have our faults, but consider the alternatives...No wonder everybody wants in.
My dad gave up an inheritance as an"imperialist" British planter to begin over, penniless, at an American university. He gave up a fortune and a life of outrageous privilege because of an idea of democracy and the American way. He served proudly as a US Naval officer. And because he was smart and hardworking, he did well here even tho my mother always teased him that he was her dirty little immigrant boy. He didn't care. He knew that everything about the country he had chosen was better than the life he left behind.
