We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Re: What Really Happened At The School Where Every Graduate Got Into College
The aggravating thing about this piece is the insistence that you're setting these kids up for failure by teaching them to game the system rather than actually do the work and get an education. You've just graduated a bunch of illiterate slackers and sent them off to college, let's see how many of them graduate college still illiterate, still unwilling to lift a finger to do any work. More than a few I'll bet - and then they'll all get government jobs making more money than half the taxpayers in this country. We should all fail so well.
"Trump’s presidency is far better than his Twitter feed
These "hail-fellow-well-met" blue-nosed, effete attorney types still don't get it!
The tweets are specifically designed to create a reaction, in the manner of assigning a brand to Trump opponents : Little Marco, Low Energy Jeb, Lyin' Ted.....on and on!
Lowry's position is basically, "Why, gentlemen simply don't do these things!" While in the real world, such "gentlemen" are getting their political asses kicked and begging for more, so the WaPo & Slim Times will give them a pat on the head for remaining above the fray!
Its politics, not beanbag or tiddlywinks, boys. Win first, then do good by your conservative principles! But then, these Conservative, Inc. phonies, such as Lowry, aren't really conservative when it comes to applying their "principles!
Soooo---let me see now: a high school graduates EVERYONE while at the same time state universities are determined to make it possible to elevate everyone. Our state university (one of the three who increased funding) accepts 97% of applicants--what does that tell us? It is time to get the KOCH brothers and others to help fund new private universities across the country. Work for tuition should include things like picking crops (work done by illegal immigrants) , cleaning up campgrounds(work done by volunteers), shoveling snow (work done by who-knows). Hard manual work should be repaid with tuition credit for course work that includes Literary Classics ( a program no longer offered at our state school), mathematics,
second language, science, and world history according to the documented facts. It would also be nice to once again return the study of journalism to a "search for facts" curriculum. MOST IMPORTANTLY in my mind would be the mandatory study of rhetoric! These campuses should start small in agricultural states and move into more densely populated areas of the larger states once the curriculum and the reputation for academic excellence and free speech has been established ( 5-10 years).
I just asked my husband - as i was reading same article - what is the acceptance rate at his 24,000 student uni and he said 87% without hesitation.
All these higher ed messes frustrate me to no end. The amount of remedial classes, lame ass courses that serve to aggetate the students and bolster the mentally myopic profs, "student health centers" that are fronts for undermining healthy human self understanding (i would luve a journalist to blow the lid off that scam, hubby is in legal so i know way too many details, the public would be aghast). I could go on and on..
I agree, this free college crap has got to end. If these silly teenagers have enough time to protest and get blotto drunk every weekend then the system is broken.
Im starting to rant...sorry.
