MLB

Average game time: 176 minutes
Live action: 18 minutes
Percentage of game time that is live action: 10.21

NFL

Average game time: 191 minutes
Live action: 11 minutes
Percentage of game time that is live action: 5.79

NHL - 60 full minutes of action.

MLS - 90 minutes. If play stops, they add time onto the end of the half to make up for it!

I think the whole kerfuffle with the NFL is a heinous plot by major league soccer to reduce interest in football and sucker folks to watch soccer instead.
(For what it's worth, I played ice hockey and soccer on my high school teams many years ago. Neither one interests me now.)

With the advent of DVR I began recording the NFL game of my preference (New England Patriots - go ahead, hate me). I was never one to sit down and watch a game, especially one at 1pm; too much stuff to do, people to see, places to go.

Now I can sit down and watch an entire game in an hour or less. I use the 30 second fast forward button to skip the commercials, and you might be surprised to learn that hitting that button when they blow the whistle to signal the end of a play forwards the recording to just before the snap of the next play.

I say an hour or less because I will occasionally rewind to watch a controversial play or one that requires video review. Having taken this approach for a couple of years now I simply cannot stand to watch a game live - too slow.

I'm with you, Steve. Been doing NFL "speed watching" for decades. Learned after I did rough stopwatch study, and found that only 15 minutes per hour of broadcast time was actual play-action.

A problem with continuous-play games is that something dramatic CAN happen at any time. I sometimes find watching a soccer game live can be exhausting since you can barely look away for fear of missing a dramatic moment. So, sometimes you end up intently watching minutes of tedious ball-passing. At least in baseball and football you know when the action is and isn't, I guess.

True, but hockey is a hell of alot more continuous than soccer. 60 second shift and a guy becomes a liability due to fatigue. Hockey needs on the fly changes as a result.

Same guys stand/jog around a soccer field for the full 90 minutes.

Y'know, I remember the 1968 World Series that Detroit won in 7 games.. Average game time was 2.5 hours. Lolitch pitched 3 games, winning them all whereas Denny Mclain winning game 6 after only 2 days rest. Also, I believe that they closely followed the rule that the pitcher had 20 seconds to deliver his next pitch after receiving the ball from the catcher. Today the game is more about the managers than the players. Batters staying outside of the batter's box for minutes at a time. Pitchers scratchin their nuts, their asses, spitting,, walking off the mound, sometimes taking 2 minute to deliver the next pitch. Nope I can't watch it anymore, same with commercial ridden football.

I don't know where the writer is getting his "live action" numbers, but I wouldn't fast-forward past any part where the game-time clock is running in sports that have them (American football, basketball, or hockey).

But in baseball and even cricket you do sometimes have long waits before the pitcher throws. And of course for soccer I don't even bother to look at the TV until I hear "¡GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLL!"
