Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Georgetown and the swastika: We haven't heard any follow-up on the Air Force whiteboard scrawls racism incident, which strengthens my suspicion that it was a hoax from the start. When they have the control they do at the prep, you can make everyone write quickly on whiteboards (or monitor whiteboards going forward) for letter-forms; you can account for people's movements at the possible times of offense better than you can at other schools. If they care so deeply about racism, they would supposedly care about discovering the perpetrator.
There are real anti-black racism incidents, certainly. But they are seldom so perfect in narrative as the hoaxes. A similar hoax ("All N words must die") written in the middle of the night on a white board outside a student's room shut down my college for a week several years ago. Sackcloth and ashes and sensitivity and non-oppression training for a week, and a claim that the FBI was being brought int to investigate.
After that, silence to this day. There was never any admission by the college the incident was a hoax, but other sources indicate that the incident was traced back to the black student who reported it. Unfortunately for her, the dorm enter-card system recorded who was going in and out, and apparently through the pattern they could tell it had to be her. School embraces identity politics and drops 30 points. The left never seems to learn and keeps repeating their failures and tries to forces those failures on the rest of us.
Last night in STL about 200 people marched to commemorate the killing of a young black guy in 2014. It doesn't seem to matter that he shot at the police officer first before return fire took him out. Behavior and cause and effect are irrelevant to certain groups. "Las Vegas Prostitute: Paddock Believed He Was ‘Born Bad"
Too bad he was talking to a prostitute instead of a Christian. The man might as well have been at home depot looking for car parts. In case you haven't heard: As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;…For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. "Here's what Corker is saying: "It's a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning."
I've thought the same sometimes " Well, you're an obvious #NeverTrumper, so why should we expect any comment/analysis which would run counter to that? As if the clown-car operations of the "best and brightest" of previous Administrations were soooo adept at running things: How'd they do in Viet Nam ? Did they win the war on Poverty or the one on Drugs? Just what did all those Ivy League profs in BHO's Admin. do for race relations? Oh yeah, "Cambridge Police are stupid," Treyvon looks like... and "Hands up don't shoot!" Just wunnerful!! But as you're an Ivy, from an Ivy heritage....can't diss the brahs, right??? I know several who voted for and like Trump. Those same people were pleased when they put a general in Trump's whitehouse for the very reasons that Corker was referring to.
"Keep your eyes and mind open." The only thing Corker's done in the Senate is attach his name to the effort to ensure the wackjob Mullahs get a nuke. Hope he's proud of himself.
If he had a political future in Tennesse he wouldn't be opting out to spend more time at home, but he knows he's toast, and a sitting senator losing an ugly primary would be way too much for his ego. Now he faces that fate worse than death all these political hacks will do anything to avoid: Rejoining the rest of us out here in the real world. Those are not persuasive arguments. Name-calling (NeverTrumper) as a sole reason to reject arguments doesn't do much for me. The criticism of Trump did not imply any praise for the Kennedy, Johnson, or Obama administrations. You are creating a ridiculous false choice.
Trump has done better than I expected, and his opponents are doing so much worse that I continue to be relieved they aren't in power. None of that means that he is beyond criticism, neither in specific nor in general. Because that's what you're saying here. You're saying no one is allowed to criticize him (except maybe you and a few pals). You didn't mean to say that, because that would be silly. But that's what you did say. Don't jump to conclusions about people who might sometimes agree with you. We have too many snowflakes, whiners and entitled brats in America who don't realize just how lucky they are to have been born in the USA. They bitch, moan and whine (BMW) about social injustice, systemic racism, oppression and inequalities of all sorts and create offenses out of the most minor and absurd events.
I used to be opposed to forced conscription, believing that a free market would send individuals to the area where there talents were most needed and best used. I've changed my mind. We need a model of forced conscription similar to what the Israeli and Swiss people use. Men and women (based on what I see in the typical college age person, this should be "boys and girls") should be required to serve in either the military or a civilian service corps for two to three years. Pay should be higher for those in the military track and promotions based on merit. So called "hardship" tours involving overseas duty should be a required component. Those refusing to serve should be deported. Immigrants should be required to serve as a requirement for (but not as a guarantee of) citizenship. I like the Swiss regimen. Military service only, civilian service would wind up becoming a do nothing snowflake summer camp experience. Military service even if you send them out to the Rockies cutting down beetle infested woods and replanting. They might learn something about reality and be far less inclined to whine when they haven't had a shower for a month or hot food for weeks. There wouldn't be near the breathless micro aggressions with a 5.56 hanging over the mantle for 40 years or so.
"Columbus Day and culture"
" The ideology of multiculturalism... seethes with thinly concealed hatred of the United States." That is the problem with every argument; every position of the alt-left. It is based on and is proud of a hatred of the United States. They aren't trying to make America better (MAGA), they want to tear it down, create havoc, make the country ungovernable, precipitate a revolution. AND their roots are in communism, they are funded by communist groups, use communist tactics and take their orders from communist leaders. That is our neo-left today; Marxist/communist/fascists. This has been true for a very long time, often in secret but now right out front where all can see. But ask yourself why isn't it news??? Why does the MSM never, never address the left's communist roots, funding, associations and marching orders? Well of course the reason is that although every lefty in the MSM may not be a communist or a communist sympathizer themselves they are alt-left acolytes who can overlook this tiny failing of the left wing activist for "the greater good" of the revolution. They are willingly blind to this internal threat to our republic. Ban Columbus Day: "Columbus Day is under assault by the proponents of multiculturalism." Some of the multiple cultures are BETTER that others, and some are WORSE: Isn't this saying that cultures are NOT EQUAL? Yes it is, and THAT IS BAD!!11!!
Georgetown Swastika: What would one think about a Hammer&Sickle scratched into the wall? I'm guessing...nothing. MSM abandons pretense of objectivity: Old, OLD news! Remember W?? And O?? Trump on How Gummint Works: Forget it, Jake, it's POLITICO-town. Since Politico was never Trump's friend, I will refrain from taking their perspective on Trump and how he thinks government works. The guy is very smart. He is 70+ years old. He has worked with government for YEARS (federal and state). I am pretty positive he knows how government works.
Now, does he know what an insider knows about the process it takes to make law? I would bet MOST of us do not have the intricate knowledge of all the steps and actions that happen between a bill coming out of committee and then making it all the way through to the President's desk. In fact, I will make a sweeping judgment and say many of us still refer back to "I'm Just a Bill" from Schoolhouse Rock days to remind ourselves how it works (from a very simplistic perspective). Is the expectation that only those involved in the intricacies of making law should be president? Is someone not allowed to be president if they learn more about the 'sausage making' while in the job? Are we to take from the article that Trump somehow is just too dumb to get it? All of this is just snobbery at its worst. You cannot be an expert in all these government. NO ONE CAN. That is why you hire different department heads to run things...they should have the expertise and knowledge that the president may not have. He should choose people to support his presidency who have backgrounds and knowledge of all different things. Notice that no one ever claimed Obama had no clue about x, y or z when he came into office. No one seemed to care if he needed input from advisers and such to understand foreign policy, law making, department issues, etc. No, everything was just great with him...oh, and just great with Bush, Clinton, etc. Yeah, they all had a perfect understanding of everything when they stepped foot into office. Remind me to look for that excellent perfect knowledge of all things federal government when electing the next President, Politico. (sarc) " Since Politico was never Trump's friend...."
hahaha... yep....that's putting it mildly. Might as well throw in a link from NRO , The Federalist and maybe a link from Slate Re: Christopher Columbus
Why aren't Columbus and the Euopeans considered to be immigrants to be celebrated? Shouldn't the "indigenous people" have welcomed them with open arms? mudbug: Shouldn't the "indigenous people" have welcomed them with open arms?
QUOTE: They … brought us parrots and balls of cotton and spears and many other things, which they exchanged for the glass beads and hawks’ bells. They willingly traded everything they owned... With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want. — Christopher Columbus You are using the wrong terminology. They weren't immigrants, they were REFUGEES from European religious, social and economic oppression. Social justice would mandate that they be welcomed to America.
You are correct about refugees and we are both right WRT to being welcomed.
QUOTE: With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want. Sounds to me like he recognized he had the upper hand and chose not to exploit it. Since the indigenous people at the time didn't have a problem with Chris, non indigenous people of today shouldn't either. mudbug: Sounds to me like he recognized he had the upper hand and chose not to exploit it.
What the? QUOTE: As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I took some of the natives by force in order that they might learn and might give me information of whatever there is {gold} in these parts. — Christopher Columbus QUOTE: Endless testimonies . .. prove the mild and pacific temperament of the natives.... But our work was to exasperate, ravage, kill, mangle and destroy; small wonder, then, if they tried to kill one of us now and then.... {Columbus} was so anxious to please the King that he committed irreparable crimes against the Indians. — Bartolomé de las Casas QUOTE: Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides ... they ceased to procreate. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and famished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desperation.... in this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk . .. and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fertile ... was depopulated. — Bartolomé de las Casas You are paid to represent the "there is no wrong or right except that conservatives are always wrong" point of view. I would expect that you would understand that when cultures clash, there is always a winner and a loser.
Europeans clashed with Native Americans and the Europeans had better technology and more unity. Yes, you can throw better immune systems into the mix as well. What if the shoe was on the other foot? What if Montezuma's boys had developed better tech and invaded Europe to impose their mores and religion on us? Would you then see them as the oppressors and Europeans as the oppressed? What is the Soros company line on that today? Dangerous Dean: You are paid to represent the "there is no wrong or right except that conservatives are always wrong" point of view.
Our opinions are our own, and freely given. Dangerous Dean: Europeans clashed with Native Americans and the Europeans had better technology and more unity. Yes, and they used that advantage to enslave and then exterminate the native peoples they encountered, often in the most cruel fashion (boiling alive, killing babies in front of mothers, feeding the living to dogs). In any case, we were responding to mudbug, who indicated that Columbus did not exploit his advantage, when, in fact, he persecuted tribes to extinction because of lust for gold. And it is your point of view that if the Native Americans had the advantage and had invaded Europe, the NAs would have been less murderous and rapacious?

Dangerous Dean: And it is your point of view that if the Native Americans had the advantage and had invaded Europe, the NAs would have been less murderous and rapacious?
We never made that claim. Rather, we were responding to mudbug who said that natives should have welcomed Columbus, which they did; and that Columbus did not exploit his advantage, which is false.

It is important to understand WHY Columbus or the Spaniards who followed him were able to dominate the natives. The Spaniards had better weapons and there was no 2nd amendment to allow the natives the right to keep and bear state of the art arms. Remember that when trying to understand why one half of our politicians want to disarm us.

The natives were armed at the time of the conquest, and the 2nd Amendment never applied to slaves.

As I said it is important to understand why the 2nd amendment is so important. Clearly, based on your response, you do not understand it. Imagine in in the 1930's every Jew in Germany had a gun in their home and even carried one concealed when they went outside. The Nazi's/fascists did imagine that and used the gun registration to confiscate arms in 1933. They followed this confiscation with the well documented purge of Jews and political enemies.

Clearly, based on your response, you do not understand the history of the Second Amendment, which never applied to slaves.

There's that evasive phrasing again. Thanks.
I believe the point was not that Columbus was pristine, but that there are no clean hands. You diverted to a slightly-different topic where you believe your case is more easily argued. As usual. Assistant Village Idiot: I believe the point was not that Columbus was pristine, but that there are no clean hands.
Actually, mudbug's comment, to which we were responding, was that Columbus did not press his advantage, when, in fact, he did.

Why Don’t Whales Get Out of the Way? Ships are huge and loud
I'm guessing earbuds plugged into streaming music service. Just like people. Senator Feinstion is so corrupt. In the 1980s, Wright and Rossi conducted some research for the National Institute for Justice and published the results in a report titled, Weapons, Crime, and Violence in America. They concluded that gun bans had little or no beneficial effect. When they published their findings they were attacked and called names. The gun ban zealots always ignore their study because they don't like the conclusions.
