We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
I don't know if I would go that far, but they are certainly better off for having been colonies. I have a friend who grew up in India. He does not wish for British rule to return but he does give them credit for giving them a system of schooling and judicial system that got them through the dark period following independence. He also applauds the slow plod toward the adoption of Western society in the forms of free markets (as the government divests itself of state run monopolies) and more social mobility (though there is a ton of work to be done there yet).
