People get off on it. For a couple of weeks, it has replaced Trump porn on the teevee.

Funniest thing I saw was some valiant reporter in the wind and rain talking about how terrible it was, how hard it was to stand up in this danger, when a guy went walking his three-legged dog on the sidewalk behind him. Maybe it was Tampa, where the Mayor says that it's not so bad, we're fine. Not what the reporter wanted to hear, because it wasn't Weather Porn.

I am thankful that the people of Florida were not hit very hard. If you live there, you are used to this sort of thing with flooding and no power for a while. It's a predictable part of life.

To your point...people who know their stuff, know their stuff. Journalism in the US is terrible. It's at an all-time low.
They want panic and fear.

I am thankful that Irma didn't hit as hard as it could have. But it's still bad. However, I live here, and you don't get "used to this sort of thing". You learn to deal with it, but it's more like dealing with a robbery, a car accident, or a serious injury. Sitting in traffic for 10 hours to go 250 miles and running out of gas is not fun. There are limited ways to leave, because everyone has to go north. Four inches of flooding destroys carpets, and brings sand and dying and dead sea life into your home. Baseboards and sheetrock have to be replaced, up to four feet. Gasoline for generators becomes tough to find at first. It's hot, muggy and mosquitie. Can we deal with it, sure. But I don't wish it on anyone. (I live in the panhandle--we got some winds (Kansas-like) and a bit of rain.)

I can tell you that an eye-wall you can stand up in isn't much of an eye-wall. I have neighbors down the street whose roof came off, and they were tumbled about their property like rag dolls before they could finally make crawl into a big truck for safety. The wind nearly took the truck's door off its hinges. They had to go find a jack to push it up so they could close it, then dive in the window. Big trees were coming down, trunks up to 24" in diameter. The weather coverage is mostly rubbish.

Many people, and their property (read: every damned thing they owned but the clothes on their backs), were hit hard, really HARD.

It's pretty hard to know what to do, especially for officials. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Weighing the pros and cons of evacuating Florida was daunting, given all the issues; power, gasoline, the sheer size of the low lying areas affected, the elderly and special needs population, the pets, the double whammy of wind and water..............I can only hope that the evacuation will have saved time and resources that would have been consumed on search and rescue and use it toward restoration.
