Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"What has been the most surprising thing you have discovered in your research?" If the answer is that they have not been surprised, or that their surprise confirmed their previous hypothesis but moreso, then they are not a serious scientist.
The black family lawsuit---
I'm so confused. I thought schools were not supposed to discipline black students any more? So, what could they do? "Musk does everything with government money"
And he's gotten more done with it than NASA has managed to do, for a lot less. I'd count that as a win. Guidance is indicating Irma will turn north in a day or so to the extent she may only brush Florida with her navigable semicircle. Remains to be seen. They've left the forecast track to the west of the guidance for now and have it running straight up Florida. Still to early to make a hard forecast for the US mainland.

Which is great! Now, since the People paid for it, can we please put SpaceX intellectual property in the public domain? That would really speed up innovation ad competition. QUOTE: Fake news update: At CNN, Retracted Story Leaves an Elite Reporting Team Bruised The article doesn't indicate that the reporting was 'fake', only that it was poorly supported. Notably, CNN publicly retracted the story, apologized, and fired the reporters and editor involved. QUOTE: Fake news is a type of propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes. It could intentionally be poorly sourced or supported like, for example, the continued stories that Michael Brown had his hands up and retreating when he was shot, displaying pictures of 14 year old Trayvon Martin when more current (and menacing) pictures were readily available, or reporting that Deputy AG threatened to resign over Comey's firing.
They failed in the most elementary canon of journalistic ethics: running a story about a controversial issue without a corroborating source. Effectively, they let their own opinion of what must have happened be the story and their sole-source of information be their corroboration.
Much like Dan Rather running with the Bush ANG memo without making any effort to verify the authenticity of the document, something he still doesn't understand was wrong. Dan Rather knew from the beginning the documents were forged, but also knew that admitting it would be the end of his career. That's why he was fired and is still radioactive to many in media. He is the epitome of fake journalism, which unfortunately now is the norm for the mainstream media.
mudbug: It could intentionally be poorly sourced or supported
However, the evidence suggests they were sloppy rather than intentional. Of course, if you call a pig a horse, you might think you can ride in style. The very article under discussion.

The article details how and why the reporting was flawed, none of which supports a claim that the reporting was "fake news".

Only after Scaramucci threatened to sue them for millions. "Don’t View Obesity as a 'Health Issue,' Professors Say
I thought overweight was a public health crisis " If it's a health issue, diets and other weight reduction methods would have to be covered by health insurance. Follow the money trail and you'll probably find insurance companies or government health departments (medicare, medicaid, VA) funding this group. The problem here, as so often, is making blanket statements. Neither ALL nor NO overweight people are so due to health issues depending on which study you read. As is, SOME (maybe a lot) of overweight people are overweight as a result of health issues (I've several medications that list weight gain as a possible side effect for example, and there are quite a few medical conditions that can also cause it). Others are overweight due to lifestyle choices. And others again have a bit of both, often undiagnosed because doctors and dieticians don't still look beyond "you're overweight, you should eat less" when trying to "help" people lose weight (and yes, I was told that for 15 years by doctors without them ever even asking what and how much I was eating, which would have surprised them). If talking bad about terrorists is enough to get you investigated for "threatening" speech, shouldn't filing a complaint about somebody using threatening speech be considered threatening speech as well? (Actually, we all know these cry-bullies aren't really threatened by the speech, they use the claim of being threatened as a weapon to silence anybody they disagree with. It's their claim of being threatened that's the real threat.)
A University spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that complaints alleging misconduct have been received against Mr Travers and these are being investigated. It is, however, untrue to suggest that Mr Travers is ‘under investigation’ for ‘mocking ISIS’.’
We MUST get rid of garbage disposers! WHY are we refusing to feed the rats and mice? They need to be fed, too! And climate change wasn't looming then? I dissent!! The coming Ice Age was in all the news in the '70s.
Musk doesn't do it with "government" money, but with taxpayer money. CNN Fake News: Awwwwwwwww, poor babies! "The remaining team members have resumed publishing, but with a narrower reporting scope; they now focus on topics less glamorous than Mr. Trump’s potential ties to Russia, like the opioid crisis and the environment."
Pretty much sums up the attitude of mainstream media journalists nowadays. The Intercept has been far more critical in its coverage of the Russia 'scandal': https://theintercept.com/2017/06/27/cnn-journalists-resign-latest-example-of-media-recklessness-on-the-russia-threat/ |
