We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
The pompous media has never understood why much of America does not embrace their liberal values. Most members of the press are too insular and dogmatic to ever conceive of any intelligent beliefs beyond their own.
The pregnant sailor problem has been around since I was in the Navy in the 90s. No one talks about it. It's hush hush. Did you know they have to airlift women off of ships once they find out they are pregnant and typically no one is added to take their place? Readiness is ruined with this type of thing.
And it's not just 'accidental' pregnancies. Plenty of women in the military are getting pregnant to get out of duty. I've experienced this myself. In your 3rd trimester you are given 'light duty.' If you have complications of any kind...no matter how minor...you can get 'bed rest' and still get paid. Once you are past your due date, you are at home, not at work. You also get 6 weeks paid leave after (or 8 weeks paid leave for c-sections).
In the military world, this is premium treatment for some. Especially if you are at the bottom of the food chain. Imagine having the worst job in the Navy...and now you are told you can get OUT of that duty if you get pregnant. It's an incentive program.
Used to be that women could ask to get out of the military early if they got pregnant. No more. Now they won't let you do that...big mistake. It is hampering the readiness of the military.
Much of what is called "cultural appropriation" would be more accurately named 1. My chance to show I know more about authentic Paraguayan cuisine than you do, or 2. My chance to blame my culture's backwardness on your oppression.
Related to the Orwell quote is a section of CS Lewis's The Abolition of Man Chapter 3, written at about the same time. You can read a quick summary with quotes here (pgs 6-7) http://www.lewissociety.org/abolition_of_man.pdf
They were very different men, yet their prophecies were similar, and have proved remarkably true.
College Affirmative Action and Parents: I forget who it was (it was a Democrat Congressman) who was against the Great Society welfare plan that would not pay welfare to unmarried mothers if a man (presumably the father) lived with her. He predicted this would happen. "Unintended consequences" rise up and bite butts most everywhere.
The massive welfare state is not accidental or unintended consequences. 99% of welfare recipients vote Democrat. The Democrats make sure that their voters know that the Republicans generally don't like welfare and would prefer a system that worked. So the welfare bums won't vote for Republicans. The Democrat are doing the same with all the illegal aliens. And with the LGBQT and every special interest group. They all know if you want free stuff and special treatment you vote Democrat. The loser in all of this is the middle class who are being squeezed by higher taxes and more oppressive regulations.
