We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

Coolers

People tell me Yeti coolers are the best.  Might be. They are the most expensive, by far. 


Keeping things cold for a day or two can be accomplished by any Coleman cooler.


My conclusion is that the Yetis are a status symbol, but if somebody gave me one, I would use it.

Yep. $99 for beer, and $166 for my monthly IRA contribution. Status Signalers apparently understand neither the present nor future value of money.

Yep! I got one too. We need it for long road trips (several days or more). It works great for keeping frozen things frozen (fish) while on the road for a few days. It will also keep ice cream frozen all day until the lid starts to be opened and closed. Kids had the Costco imitation and it was not nearly as good, but it was just as heavy ! We have a small Coleman and it is good for a few hours and that's all. There is a difference!

My son swears that Pelican coolers are better than Yeti and significantly cheaper. Same insulation materials. He gets 8 days out of the ice in one.

They are definitely a status symbol. People put Yeti bumper stickers on their cars. And I think everyone is aware of the only reason you put bumper stickers on your car is to tell strangers something you think is good about yourself

Coleman makes a 5 day cooler (actually works for about 4). Plenty good enough to keep things for a 3 day weekend. Less than $50.

If you just need a cooler, the Yetis are too expensive.

But, if you need your cooler to not be opened by a grizzly, then the Yetis are one of the few you can rely on.
