Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Monday, July 10. 2017Monday morning linksIt's good to be back in the land of Dunkin Donuts. The Scots are tea-drinkers. Well, tea, ale, and whisky drinkers. You can't get a cup of coffee until, at the very earliest, 7:30. Utterly unacceptable. Europeans do not seem to be early-risers. Many thanks to our occasional (too-occasional) contributor Roger de Hauteville, the one-time Viking King of Sicily, for his unique morning links over recent days. Roger has a gift. The demise of journalistic standards?
I don't think it is new but maybe it is exacerbated by technology. Looks like Trump exploited it to his advantage. Click bait and soap opera drama and hype have swamped whatever journalism might still exist. Heh

"We'll be neighbors!" — Tevye the Dairyman The Pope" is a socialist/Marxist and believes in sharing your wealth with the poor. Open borders and mass immigration is a socialist/Marxist effort to overwhelm the Democratic/capitalist societies and rob them of their wealth. Simple as that.
OneGuy: "The Pope ... believes in sharing your wealth with the poor"
QUOTE: And the crowds asked [John the Baptist], "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." (NRSV, Luke 3:10-11) We agree with you. Christians are subversive. We must suppress this strange sect. So now, instead of doing charity voluntarily, the Pope and all the commies will make sure you do it whether you want to or not.
Pretty sure that's not what John had in mind. I'm just quoting your bible. You are Christian, aren't you?
I must have misquoted another bible. How about this: QUOTE: For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink -- Matthew 25:35-40New International Version (NIV)Does yours say, "feed only the Socially Approved hungry"? you Christians confuse me. Your bible says you "must share", and you whine about being reminded about what it says. What part of "must" confuses you? No the bible says you may/should share not 'must'. It is government who says you 'must' share.
Besides most 'Christians' believe that the bible is a history with social/religious suggestions not 'demands'.

Sackriel's blind spot exists where it conflates private and collective, giving and taking. Indeed, it is a Socialist's failing, this most essential of differences.
However the right, being largely ostensible and entirely impotent, insistently fails to point out this philosophy of force; of theft. Sad, because a century of creeping crud could have been stemmed had the right merely observed, constantly and loudly, the philosophies underlying theft as contrasted with those underlying liberty. The right lost a nation. This empowers but does not indemnify our Sackriels, and it telsl us how we got here, meekly offering them our minor defenses of what is arguably Christianity's and our nations central virtue, which is that thou shalt not oppress one another. Not by force, not by slavery, not by theft, not by coveting, not by redistribution, not by The Lie. Demand of the leftist why he would force you in any way and demand of the leftist how that force could somehow give him the moral standing he's adopted against you, fallaciously.

Nut, that's a child's understanding of the bible. It's usually a predictable response given by socialists.
The Pope, by the way, was not speaking infallibly. Catholics are not required to agree with the Pope's economic no political principles.

So is Valerie Jarrett cleaning the house and maintaining the yard at the Obama's D.C. digs while they jet set around the world? Ha, ha!
What ever happened to the U.S. strategic industrial policy that made certain our country produced within our borders all the products necessary to protect itself during disasters, be they natural or military? At this point we would have to collect parts from around the world, and some would be from nations not too interested in our survival.
The Trump administration's efforts to reignite the coal and steel industries is just one example of smart defense. Hopefully, it just the beginning of bringing production in many other critical industries back to our shores. I totally agree. It worries me that we don't seem to have any long range strategic thinking/planning. When I was a kid our schools had food and medical supplies stashed in the basement. Our government had warehouses full of food. The military and strategic industries had stockpiles of critical materials. I don't think we are doing this anymore. During WW II we manufactured a ship everyday to move supplies around for the military. If we were to have a WW III it is likely that we would be forced to fight it with what we had on day one.
