We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.
Belmont Club commenter subotai bahadur says it better than I can:
We may have already fatally straddled the knife edge. Consider. We are two hostile countries and peoples. It only takes one to make a war, and that war is being waged. There is no longer ANY common ground, let alone enough common ground for a resolution that will remain peaceful.
The Left specifically renounces the Constitution, the law, due process, elections, and consent of the governed. They have openly resorted to violence in place of electoral politics. Today, they have explicitly made their words encouraging political violence and assassination into fact. They have called for our deaths, and acted on that call. Take them at their word. No Leftist [and there are no non-Leftist Democrats and have not been for decades] can be trusted or depended upon to do anything but betray kith, kin, and country in search of power.
This will not be resolved until one side or the other is crushed beyond the ability to rise again. If they are not bound by the law and the Constitution, then neither are we. This last is something that we have to realize and internalize. They are not our countrymen. They do not regard us as the same species.
We believe that these actions are inevitable. As Lenin has fabulously stated,
We must not depict socialism as if socialists will bring it to us on a plate all nicely dressed. That will never happen. Not a single problem of the class struggle has ever been solved in history except by violence. When violence is exercised by the working people, by the mass of exploited against the exploiters — then we are for it!
It is a mistake to conclude that the country is fatally divided based on the actions of one individual.
While the really nasty and violence encouraging rhetoric clearly encourages a few nut cases to commit violent acts it does not convince the 99.999% of us to commit violent acts.
I do believe groups like BLM and the antifa have stepped over the line and committed and encouraged violence and where appropriate they should be charged with a crime. But otherwise freedom of speech is freedom of speech and it should not be infringed.
Unfortunately, you can't escape, since much of the local newspaper content around the country now is simply reprinted material from NYT, WaPo, AP, etc. One reason I don't even bother to read our local city newspaper.
From here, pretty much radio silence from the mainstream media on the fact that there was a mass assassination attempt on the elected leaders of one of the nation's political parties. Instead, they are pumping up the idiot student we got back from North Korea, and yet more "investigation of Trump" with five new anonymous sources.
Understand. What is Trump being attacked for? ENFORCEMENT of our nation's laws, after 8 years of lawlessness under the prior president.
First Marx lived off rich daddy, then off rich Engels. His whole philosophy was a pout about how hard it was to find someone to live off of; why can't society be arranged so that I'm supported in comfort without having to please anyone?
