Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Even in the face of Islamist attacks and Jamaican yardies packing heat, the UK still seems incapable of detaching itself from its idyll of the unarmed bobby.
The reality is that one or two police constables armed with handguns would likely have ended this incident quite quickly and saved seven innocent lives. These weren't regular police, they were, apparently, Police community support officers, a grade of policing not present in the US and somewhere between rent-a-cops/meter maids and the regular force. Armed police response came within eight minutes.
This really illustrates the adage that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away and the need for trained, armed citizens, whether concealed or open. This particular incident has divided the conceal carry community on reddit, over the proper response since a miss with a gunshot in a crowded situation can mean innocent fatalities. The best response seems to be, if you can escape (especially with family) do so, if you're cornered (as were the people in the bars), fight with whatever is at hand, whether its a chair or a 9mm. I lived in London for many a year and I know what a CSO is.
I meant Met PCs armed with handguns like their counterparts everywhere else in the world. The readers of the news article might not, thus the clarification. Your response makes sense only if the community police were the equivalent of the regular force which they are clearly not, and there's no indication that any regular police officer fled as the blurb above implies:
QUOTE: LONDON CITIZENS Had to THROW CHAIRS at Terrorists Because UNARMED POLICE RAN AWAY Armed London police responded in eight minutes. "As of 2013, the reported national [US] average for police response time was 11 minutes." source If citizen threw chairs and bottles, why didn't these 'community' police rent-a-cops do the same? If they are there to provide some level of protection or presence, why didn't THEY have the guts to try something to protect people?
That's the sad part.

they're not rent a cops. they're uniformed members of the various police departments there and exactly 15 seconds on google show you that their duties did not include engaging terrorists.
so that's a presumptuous accusation of cowardice for someone who wasn't there and didn't see anything and doesn't know what their job description actually is. whilst it is obvious that everyone at MF would bravely march to the sound of the knives, mowing down terrorists left and right, you should cut these limeys some slack.

And let us not forget one "bobby" armed only with a truncheon did stand his ground and confront the terrorists. He was seriously wounded. However, it is likely his heroism gave more people time to flee to safety.

Poor sod will likely get a reprimand, if he doesn't lose his job altogether.
Policy is important - doing something you're not trained to do could cost you your job. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3189696/How-police-stand-watch-boy-drown-6ft-water-did-STOP-bystanders-diving-save-investigate-disturbing-elf-n-safety-debacle-yet.html

I was trying to do a blanket description...it was claimed they were not 'armed' police with guns. So if they only had billy clubs and were there for some level of protection, I think it is very normal to question why there was a report that these people fled, while regular citizens fought back.
Are they trained to 'flee' when encountering people with knives? What are they there to do if not engage with possible criminals or criminal activity? Does not stabbing people equal a crime? Why would you take such a job if you didn't acknowledge the fact you may run into 'criminals' in the act of crimes that you would need to engage with? What is the purpose of such 'police'? Please explain to me.

you should ask those questions and know the answers before you accuse someone of cowardice.

Hillary: Well, she just isn't likeable enough.
Al Gore Bull Warming Predictions: Predicting the future is difficult, especially in the relatively near future, and dangerous to your reputation when all those predictions are available to the public. UNRWA: Can't be trusted. So, when midlife crisis became a thing, boomers were at midlife. Now were supposed to be concerned about late-life crisis. Who are now reaching late life?
I can't wait for the next huge dramedy TV series, 70-Something. "The UK: Funny how our pols are now all experts on Islam."
There is nothing more tedious, annoying and patronizing than (largely secular) politicians waxing eloquent on Islamic theology. My first questions to myself when I hear them are: "Oh, are you an imam? A Muslim scholar? When did you become an expert on Islam?" It's really no different than their "What meant to say was..." when talking about Christianity.
Edit: It's really no different than their "What [St. Paul/St. Peter/Jesus] meant to say was..." when talking about Christianity.
The biggest stupidity was when George W. Bush mistranslated "Islam" as "Religion of Peace." We suffer from that mis-characterization until this day.
Islam means "Religion of SUBMISSION," as in, convert or die. Is the medical journal with the highest rate of retractions a demonstration of fraud or integrity?
It's hard to tell nowadays with the lack of repeatability in medical and scientific studies. This goes deeper. It's more like one of those "We're restating our last three years' earnings after our auditors issued an opinion that the firm lacked sufficient internal controls to ensure reported results were in compliance with applicable standards" statements form the Enron era.

What is there to say except that guys like this can only be put in the category of "male cow". Slow, cowardly and docile right in to the slaughter house! In Montana that expression is also used because a "male" cow can't give milk and the meat is no good for eating.
