We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

It’s Long Past Time for Our NATO Allies to Meet Their Defense-Spending Commitments
NATO member commitments are for 2% of GDP for military spending — by 2024. But at least Montenegro won't push America around any more!
That's right. There are two issues; the administrative costs of NATO, and the military costs by each country. Every country contributes to the administrative costs based on Gross National Income, and no one is in arrears. The military spending is towards each countries own military, not a dues paid to NATO or the U.S., and as your link says "members agreed in 2014, and reaffirmed at a summit last year, on a commitment for each to spend at least two percent of GDP on defense spending, by 2024."
So you really didn't have a point, you just posted snark again.
It's either fallacy or snark from you. What's it like to be wrong?
Exactly. The Zzzz want to gloss over the fact that the U.S. has carried 1/5 or more of the costs of NATO for years (with borrowed money, I might add).
It's time for the freeloaders to contribute their fair share now not years from now...
Are you referring to the NATO budget? The NATO budget is only a billion dollars, and is basically administrative. U.S. GDP is about the same size as Europe's. Not sure what you think the U.S. share should be? You seem to be conflating NATO's administrative budget with military spending. NATO countries have agreed to increase their military expendures.
The claim was that NATO countries were not meeting their commitments, which was false.
Zzzzz: The claim was that NATO countries were not meeting their commitments, which was false.
So when your initial link contradicts your position, you post another. First, you were apparently conflating administrative costs with military expenditures. Second, NATO is committed to raising military spending to 2% of each country's GDP by 2024. Perhaps NATO countries should step up funding sooner, but it is false to say they are not meeting their commitments.
Wales Summit Declaration
As for the U.S. implying they won't honor Article 5, the NATO alliance's promise of mutual protection, such an implication is highly destabilizing. Both allies and adversaries may misread the situation, and bring about an avoidable conflict. This is especially poor form as the only time Article 5 has been invoked was because of the 9-11-2001 attack on the U.S. NATO allies have endured thousands of casualties based on their promise to respond to an attack on the U.S. — yet the U.S. President won't say if he would respond to an attack on other NATO allies.
NATO's own figures dispute your assertion.
Keep trying, kiddies.
drowningpuppies: NATO's own figures dispute your assertion.
Huh? Yes, most NATO allies are spending less than 2% of GDP on military expenditures. However, European allies have committed to raising military expenditures to 2% of GDP by 2024. We linked to the Wales Summit Declaration. We can't make you read it. The commitment, made in 2014, is to "move towards the 2% guideline within a decade with a view to meeting their NATO Capability Targets and filling NATO's capability shortfalls."
The claim is that they are not meeting their commitments, which is based on a date of 2024.
Dilbert nailed it. For that he should be shunned and his life destroyed. Surely the left can find some woman somewhere that will swear he sexually harrassed her, after all that has worked so well to destroy other prominent people the left dislikes. Maybe once 40 years ago he said the "N" word and that alone is enough to destroy him (unless of course you are a rapper). Perhaps we can get a comedian to hold up a "mask" of his head severed from his body.
I've had a few liberal Ashkenazi Jewish friends brag about the high IQ before. Fine with me. OK to talk up your people a bit.
But they invariably get agitated when I pointed out that that likely means some other specific group(s) have below average IQ. Much sputtering and discomfort.
I know a handful of millionaires. All of them regular people without any college. No geniuses in the group. I know and have known a lot of brilliant high IQ people. Not a millionaire in the bunch.
I know someone will say that wealth/success alone is not the only or best measure of "success". Fair enough. But it reminded me that I know and have known some of the nicest most honest sincere people in the world. People I would trust with my life, with my money, with my children/grandchildren. Without exception they are all openly religious people. Those qualities, in my opinion, are the best measure of success. I can't remember a single genius in that group either.
The Military Must Break from the Past. The link to Landrieu's speech does NOT work.
Two World Wars, pogroms, the Holocaust, religious wars, millions killed via "not true communism", colonialism, allowing themselves to be overrun by progressive, tolerant Muslims, etc. (most all these post-Enlightenment, so spare me in advance any shit-talk regarding that) courtesy of Europe, so I - in earnest - hope they can share more of their wisdom with us rubes in the U.S.
Sorry, it's the implicit bias talking.
They did a good job with art and music, however.
They did do amazing things with art and music.
And tongue-in-cheek aside, Europe did so many wonderful things in so many areas it's staggering. But they've lost the plot, and look to be using the fact that they haven't been perfect as an excuse to trash the valuable things they have done so well.
Yeah, to paraphrase the old saying, what has Europe achieved lately.
"Lost the plot" good analogy.
I'm pretty sure it's this
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Prov 1:7
When those of the "Enlightenment" decided that they were wise in their own eyes, and their philosophy and technology showed they didn't need that old time religion, God let them have their own way.
The only word that aptly explains Europe right now is "foolish".
It's not so much that the typical European has stopped believing in God, it's that he assumes that no one else believes in Him either. Thus the whole idea that anyone can be motivated out of religious conviction is utterly foreign to him.
Under-represented groups trading protection from charges of racism for special consideration. It's simple economics
It seems to me, given the childhood obesity epidemic, that young children being socially responsible enough to nudge their unhealthy classmates in the direction of consuming fewer of Mother Gaia's precious resources, minimizing their carbon footprint, and easing the burden on our healthcare delivery system would be praised rather than shame shamed for their efforts. Maybe it's just that some people go out of their way to make themselves feel smug and superior by finding some way to condemn everybody else as not being sufficiently woke no matter what. You know, like how if you show an interest and appreciation for other cultures that's cultural appropriation but if you don't show an interest and appreciation for other cultures you're a racist xenophobe. Doesn't matter what you do, you're wrong.
