Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

For Mother's Day, Release a Mom! She's a breeder!


For Atlantic coast Striper fishermen, Stripers Forever


As with lobsters, for conservation purposes it is better to eat the small ones and release the big ones. Laws are often irrational. Small sea critters have poor survival rates anyway, but the big breeders matter for the future.


Rational and effective conservation law would be to keep the small ones and throw back the big ones.

Besides, the small ones are better eatin' (at least those caught in fresh water).

Fish, like insects, reproduce by vastly over-producing young with the 'expectation' that most won't survive. This is the opposite strategy from many mammals (and certainly humans) where
producing a few young and conserving as many as possible is the norm.

The over production strategy works especially well when conditions are variable year to year because the population can balloon in a single season.
