Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

"How Denmark is eradicating Down Syndrome"
I'm afraid to click this link. Oh, they are so proud of themselves. Killing off the undesirables. Eliminating those that would disrupt their idyllic lifestyle. It's so very sad.
Yes, and we fought a bloody war to comprehensively crush an ideology that touted - and mercilessly practised - such eugenics.
An ideology whose acolytes occupied Denmark during that war, requiring the Allies (i.e., us) to liberate the country in 1945. Words fail. Re: Health Insurance
Health insurance reform (along with tort reform) are important but what is always overlooked is pricing. You can't have a real market unless you know the price of the goods and in the current insurance environment there is no incentive for price discovery. If insurance is "fixed" less than half the real problem has been addressed. Hate to tell you, but hospitals have no idea how much things really cost. All they know are the reimbursement rates from Medicare and the rest is all negotiated with different insurance companies to make up the difference.
When the government is setting the rates, you end up with the mess we have right now. The majority of money that a hospital makes comes from Medicare patients. The rest of us carry the burden of paying what the government won't pay. Surgery Center of Oklahoma (and some others) have built highly successful enterprises by posting their (highly discounted) prices and accepting cash only. Logically, one would use a health savings account and only need to carry a catastrophic policy, which was much as people did the whole healthcare bit many decades ago before the government got involved in every little detail.
The surgery center story is one that many may not understand. Cash medical practice began to grow pretty rapidly as Obamacare and the ramifications began to destroy medical practice as we knew it. You cannot give discounts for cash payment if you accept Medicare and are contracted with an insurance company. You have to drop Medicare and insurance to offer prices openly. The prices charged to insurance companies are negotiated with each provider and are trade secrets. If you do go the cash route,as was the tradition until the 1960s, you can cut overhead by as much as 75%. That is the cost of collecting all the insurance and Medicare bills.
Thank you for expanding on this topic. I found this site which I meant to include in my former post as the Oklahoma center is the only one where I've had experience, but there are others trying to move to this model. Transparency would certainly add a YUGE dimension to proving consumer-educated health CARE.
http://clearhealthcosts.com/blog/2014/06/new-hospital-data-draft/ I met a heart-and-lung specialist who was frustrated by 'the rules.' She had many elderly patients who wanted to take specific tests. She told them she could not give these tests (as they were no reimbursed by Medicare for whatever diagnosis and treatment plan they had). Then the patients would ask if they could pay for the test out of pocket. She could not do that either or lose her Medicare provider status.
SO STUPID. Sweden will not deport rapists:
Sweden has a serious problem and it gets worse everyday. Swedes should do three things to fix their nation: 1. If the leaders and the judicial system refuses to deal with these violent criminals the Swedes must do it themselves. 2. Throw out your leaders. They are gutless fools and worse. If you cannot do it at the ballot box do it by force. 3. Deport your muslim immigrants. Not just those who committed crimes but all of them. Yes the women and children too. They are unable to integrate and Westernize themselves and equally unable to stop committing violent acts in the name of their religion/ideology. IMHO if the Swedes do this now they can take back their country and survive and thrive. If they do not do it now it will only become more and more difficult to take their country back in the future. Ultimately they will find themselves to one day be refugees looking desperately for some country to take them in. Look at South Africa, this is your future. UT-Arlington is not the same as the University of Texas flagship in Austin.
The generation of Swedes who currently run the country were never inside a church. They were indoctrinate, inculcated, and only rewarded as children when they lived by the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" conundrum. The result is they are spineless! When you teach a child to deprive themselves of thought and speech--you deprive them of the ability to respond to evil or to anything good for that matter! They are now just robots! Very much like 1984! Nice and courteous--but without courage, without a soul. They are the living proof the 1984 test tube!
