Maggie's Farm

We are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for.

A national trend

Over time, fewer Americans are taking responsibility for their medical expenses. Over time, this drives up costs and an entitlement state of mind.


Something similar has happened with education, I think. 



 So medical "insurance" is no longer true insurance except at the catastrophic end. If the old model was Major Medical insurance against catastrophe, the new model is more of a medical payment system. That has changed everything.

The attitude is ubiquitous. Me at the pharmacy:

RX: We'll check to see if this is approved.
Me: It's approved. My Dr wrote the prescription.
RX: We're checking with your insurance.
Me: How much does it cost?
RX: You'll pay $15 if it's approved.
Me: Sorry, I meant how much does it cost if I just pay cash?
RX: It'll be $15, same as if you put it on a card.
Me: How much does the prescription cost if I choose to pay full price without using insurance?
RX: Ohhhhhh
