Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

The federal government should not be involved in student loans or grants and other free stuff for students. The system if full of fraud, waste and abuse and most schools have created non-eductaion/non-serious programs to harvest their share of the free stuff that congress hands out. Does anyone really believe that black studies, hispanic studies or women's studies is a legitimate program for higher education? These programs were designed as 'gimmes' for potential students who could never pass legitimate higher education classes. The schools should be sued for malpractice.

QUOTE: The federal government should not be involved in student loans or grants and other free stuff for students. the G.I. Bill worked for me. a lot of men (of whom you are not numbered) and women on this forum benefited from it. I have wondered about the law of diminishing returns on this. Government programs, including the initial GI Bill, are sometimes very successful at first, picking off the low-hanging fruit. A person who has already shown some ability to finish a job, endure hardship, follow directions, and deal with a variety of people - giving them a leg up on going to college looked like a good bet, and it was.
A bureaucrat's response is to say "Hey, let's do even more of that." Which isn't stupid, but we likely won't do so well with the next batch and we need to be alert for when we've squeezed out most of the juice. Eventually it contributes to the "everyone should go to college" mentality which we are now paying the price for. The GI Bill was not the primary driver of that, I grant. Yet is was a large part. The original GI Bill was enacted in 1944, and I'm sure you don't want to refer to the returning vets of WW2 as "low hanging fruit".
I'll concede that every government program could use better oversight and that there are manifestly many ways of abusing benefits. I'll also concede that not every tweak to programs like the GI Bill are successful or even needed -- but consider that Little Barry's EO that was intended to protect vets from predatory colleges was a good and needed idea. but conceding the need for reform or better drafted legislation is not grounds for a wholesale condemnation of government assistance to students, which is GoneWindy's bullshit. I agree with you that the "kollege for everyone" mindset is harmful to individuals and a waste of public money. BUT ... a man or woman who served and qualified under GI Bill benefits has earned the right to attend, on the public dime, any college he or she can get into and study any program that school offers, even if its Wymyns Studies at Social Justice U. I don't think you read closely, though perhaps the misunderstanding comes from my poor writing. The original WWII vets, like my father and father-in-law, were indeed the "Low-hanging fruit" I was referring to. Those were apples that any fool of a politician could pick and get a return on college tuition, even with a poorly-designed program. It would actually have been difficult to screw that up, paying for college for those guys. The next batch, of guys going into the service in order to get tuition money, is also pretty good, but maybe not quite. Looking at that success and saying "hey, let's give tuition, or at least cheap loans, to lots of people" had both successes and failures, because the pool was less good than the previous two. The last step, of "let's give tuition and cheap loans to people who are actually undeserving, in the hopes that they will shape up" had very few successes indeed.
I agree that GWTW overlooked a major factor in his blanket statement. I misunderstood the low hanging fruit meaning. my fault there; my dad was one of those as well. Otherwise the slippery slope illustration is well taken.

Handouts always work, you clattering face melon, much as bank robberies work when they work, for whom they work for.
Judas Priest. I mean, you can't make this up. Unless you're a deranged Trolling Robot but even then it had to be programmed in. you're telling the Farm that the GI Bill is a handout?
don't pull a windy or sachriels and evade the question. be honest for once. don't be afraid, while people will think that's an assaholic thing to say, no one will hurt you. Hey, the mumbling head rafter really does need it explained. Would that be best as a nice list of official conservative-approved federal collectivist benefit efforts or would you prefer a more theoretical explanation of government potluck? I'm hedging because I don't want to casually explain reality and create any giant whooshing effects overhead and see everybody pass out and miss the bloody point.

Windy: Redistributions of collective funds are no business of the feds.
Vic Donnie bear's gorilla's thumbtack: Moron. Free Post-war kollege made me the lad I am today. Ten: Handouts always 'work', you simmering cheese lather. Obviously it depends on what side of the ledger you're on. Vic Donnie bear's gorilla's flange nut: Ima sic the entire blog and Vet's local on you, Ten, unless you see the many splendored benefits of Good Socialisms, what I EARNED on account-a war, you flaccid communist cafe shingle. Ten: Afraid I'm going to have to come down on Windy's side, Vic Donnie bear's gorilla's pickle platter. Disguising a thing doesn't change it and neither does disguising it in a nice dress of polka-dotted popular acclaim from your Vargas calendar. Not only are redistributions of collective funds - or of debt - no business of the feds, your Keynesian econ a valid social collective effort maketh not, nor even among your odd notion that because our nation called, we're inherently entitled to free loafers from Amazon. This is known as principle. Vic Donnie bear's gorilla's herb farm: What are you, some kind of [expletive] kollege SJW [expletive] veteran-insulting seditionist, you unpatriotic [expletive] anti-American? I damn well just proved using this my nice fallacy here what a patriot I are, you unsavory defective [expletive] unbeliever! Why, I ougtta!

19th Century Design: Portland trolleys work? I hear they don't, from a Portland blogger named for the trolley line:
http://maxredline.typepad.com/ Chelsea getting a "Lifetime Achievement Award" = Obama's Nobel Peace Prize. RE FRENCH COPS LOOKING FOR MOTIVE OF "I'M HERE TO DIE IN THE NAME OF ALLAH" TERRORIST
get Inspector Clouseau on the case, its gonna be le toughie. If Chelsea can go her whole life without doing anything, we should be very grateful and give her a lifetime achievement award.
Yeah, her achievements so far include not getting caught doing anything illegal, not getting caught in illicit sex, no bald face lying, not shaking down foreign governments. Pretty impressive for a Clinton.
RE Woodpile garbage
QUOTE: From Alexander Hamilton, The Examination Number VIII, 1802, on the subject of immigration: ... The United States have already felt the evils of incorporating a large number of foreigners into their national mass; ... who were these immigrants during the period that Ham was writing about? obviously, blacks, because Ham's constitution preserved the slave trade into the US until 1808 and their numbers more than doubled. otherwise, the big source of immigrants during this period were British or Irish (presumably evil Catholics). the Naturalization Act of 1790 limited citizenship to free white persons of good character which excluded blacks and injuns. this will sound like a modern day wet dream to Sturmfront and other bigots, but let us charitably remember when Ham was bloviating. http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/03/22/gunshots-heard-outside-parliament/
More dead and critically injured thanks to unfettered immigration. I'm sure the apologists will be quick to respond. The UK, France, Germany and Sweden make headlines everyday. Isn't immigration great? It has just begun, it will get worse. Actually a large number of the Hessian soldiers that served England stayed in the US. Englishmen were the preferred nationality of the founders.
" FRENCH COPS LOOKING FOR MOTIVE OF "I'M HERE TO DIE IN THE NAME OF ALLAH" TERRORIST"
Maybe he was all out of bubble gum? "ARE THE SAUDIS ABOUT TO LOSE CONTROL OF AMERICA?"
Well, the Bushes are essentially out, the Clintons are in decline and Obama's shadow government is not fairing well in the light. Repealing the ACA has not become a 'trainwreck.' This is how government is supposed to work...messy, argumentative, and slower than we would like. This bill will pass the House with a bit more tinkering.
We have been led to believe that negotiating, arguing and stonewalling was not part of the legislative process, when, in fact, it IS. Everything is operating normally in Congress right now. Stop complaining and freaking out. What we are seeing is Congress acting as a congress and not as a parliament.
"19th Century design makes people happy"
I recommend this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHw4MMEnmpc Roger Scruton discusses the loss of the concept and love of beauty in art, music, architecture. Well worth the hour. Hope this little item rises to the top of the list today. I really think BD should post it in the daily list of reads.
