I'm no longer a Democrat (it's been many years now), and though on the rarest of occasions I worried I'd made a mistake, Tuesday night watching the shell-shocked faces of the Democrats on the floor of Congress while Donald Trump delivered his magnificent speech, I knew I had made no error. I even wondered what was going on in my head in those isolated moments I doubted myself.

The Democratic Party members watching that speech looked like a party of the living dead. They didn't know how to react. They didn't know if they were Americans. They didn't know who they were.

In Congress speech, Trump stood to unify while Democrats sat to divide:

...despite delivering an unquestionably positive message, Democratic members like Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi glared, shaking their heads and scowling in apparent anger. Notable were moments when Trump proposed bipartisan positions like extending treatment opportunities for Americans addicted to drugs. Despite the uncontroversial nature of these policies, Democrats sat in defiance.

But Trump’s message of one America nevertheless persisted. Between the bookends of unity, Trump doubled down on his campaign promises to the American people, but he did so in a way that broadened their appeal. He pierced through the unflattering portrayal of the mainstream media and articulated the well-reasoned impetus behind his proposals.

Still trying to figure out who on the Dem side decided it was a good time to boo Trump. When you are talking about crime victims and helping support them, get them justice, etc. Who in their right mind would boo at that moment?

They clearly were listening for the word 'immigrant' and were not listening to the speech at all. This will go down as the day the Democrats hit another downward trajectory in popularity.

One way to correct the sanctuary city problem is to impose personal liability on city officials who allow sanctuary to illegals who then commit crimes. San Francisco city officials might be looking at things differently if they were facing personal liability in a multi-million dollar wrongful death suit brought against them by Kate Steinle's family, for example.

This is stupid from so many levels and in the same way as the welfare system we currently have. Homelessness is a symptom of either not having a job or not having a good enough job to sustain oneself so shouldn't that be the illness? You can't reduce poverty by giving people money. Fifty years of the Great Society have proved that.

Perhaps not having/keeping a job is in turn a symptom of the real "illness" afflicting many homeless, i.e. laying low to avoid alimony, child support etc. I see a field ripe for liberal plowing here, i.e. giving aid to the afflicted homeless to meet alimony/child support obligations, thereby more firmly attaching millions of EBT recipients to the welfare tit. A vote-getting twofer if there ever was one. Dress it up in liberal BS and it should pass easily in the next all-Dem administration (if there ever is another one).

Why would it take any less time than to wise up to the failure that is the Great Society ("the days of the dole are over"). We've been waiting for over fifty years for that.

That's been true for a long time. Quite a number of the chronically homeless are from off island, either the mainland or from Micronesia. Micronesians come to Hawaii to look for jobs and are able to come legally because of the US-Micronesia Compact of Free Association.

The strategy behind declaring homelessness a medical illness is to allow medicaid funding to be diverted from the provision of medical care to the provision of housing of the homeless poor, which (in theory) would have the indirect effect of reducing the cost of giving medical care for the homeless people covered by medicaid. The Federal government has yet to give its approval for such an approach.

Poverty is only a symptom. Until politicians and our supposed "civic minded" institutions accept that reality we will only acquire more poverty and be dumbfounded by its occurrence. Perhaps all government buildings, local, state, and federal, need to start posting the root causes on their hallway walls instead of the current list of local sources for free stuff.

Several years ago, during the Obama Administration, I vacationed in Hawaii. The number of homeless people was shocking! There were two worlds; the rich and the destitute. Each beach we visited had full facilities with toilets, sinks and showers stalls, a person could easily maintain themselves hygienically and we often saw that they did. Two things came to mind when seeing all of these homeless people, how did they cross the ocean to get there and how sad it was they could not get back to the mainland.

This is the second article today I saw about homeless people - like clockwork - an R in office = homeless crisis! Expect more.

I too like to visit Hawaii and have noticed the "homeless" problem there. No coincidence, they picked that spot and they choose their lifestyle. Not saying they made a wise. In most cases the "homeless" we see around us are either mentally ill and/or addicts. There are s sprinkling of people down on their luck but in general they pull themselves out of that situation and are not among the long term "homeless". Any effort to address homelessness that doesn't first address mental illness and addiction is a waste of time. Simply creating housing and food kitchens is naive at best and enabling at worst. If you want the problem to grow then give them aid that does not address the underlying problems.

knowing that no one here would bother to read the text of the actual bill, and instead react reflexively in the usual stupid way people who don't read the actual text of laws react, or the usual stupid way zachriels preaches about what he doesn't get, here's the bill itself. note that it authorizes a cost/benefit analysis on the use of medicaid funds and make recommendations.

note: there's a bloody stupid difference in this context between "houses" and "housing". holy shi'ite doesn't anyone here read anything besides the press????

SECTION 1. The purpose of this Act is to require the auditor to conduct a study to assess the impact of using medicaid funds to provide coverage for the treatment for homelessness.

SECTION 2. (a) The auditor shall conduct a study to assess the impact of using medicaid funds to provide coverage for the treatment for homelessness, including the costs to provide coverage for the chronically homeless population in the State; provided that for the purposes of this Act, "treatment" or "treatment for homelessness" includes:

(1) Behavioral health services, including mental health and substance abuse services;

(2) Case management;

(3) Personal care and personal assistance services;

(4) Home and community-based services; and

(5) Housing services.

(b) The auditor shall submit findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2018.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2017.

One contributor to homelessness is government regulation of what considers suitable shelter. If you can't afford that (and even non-profit shelters have problems making the grade sufficiently to house more people on cots), then you are on the street. In cold climates, many shelter beds are pretty much locked up for the winter in November, unless someone screws himself over by showing up drugged and getting in a fight and kicked out.

The analogy is that if you can't afford a Mercedes, you can have no car at all.

It is a great pretend game to think the democrat party is in the final stages of their demise. Clearly fifty or more percent of the voting public does not think so. Conservatives may have the land mass, but democrats control the major population centers. Maybe we are witnessing a sea change, time will tell.

We are witnessing a great opportunity to change hearts and minds. It will not come with out great convulsions. Changing your life's long political presumptions does not happen overnight, or with out a willingness to change. I don't believe hardcore leftists will ever change. At least not in my lifetime. And those hardcore leftists, continue to control all of the influencing culture institutions.

The best we can do for future generations, is to remove that culture influence from our schools. Remove the propagandist from the classroom. Get back to educating our youth instead of indoctrinating them. Give the youth the tools to come to their own conclusions. Under those circumstances, Liberty will win every time, I am sure of it.
