Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Re: Fast food prices before and after $15
Keep in mind that Philadelphia just instituted a sugary-drink tax that has doubled the price of soft drinks there - the mayor has of course blamed the greedy retailers for passing the tax on to the consumers rather than eating the cost of the tax as he thinks they should and apparently thought they would. Raise the minimum wage all you want, the resulting price increases will just be blamed on the greedy employers gouging the consumers because obviously what you pay your burger-flipper has no relation whatsoever to how much you charge for a burger. All the smart people know retailers just make up random prices and have like 50% profit margins. Re: Trump's Rise Was Rooted in These Three Things
Everybody's got explanations for why their predictions didn't pan out or why what they failed to predict happened. I remember watching CNN during the primaries and shaking my head over how openly they were promoting Trump - letting him call in and talk about whatever he wanted to, always having a Trump spokesman in any panel discussion, always focusing on whatever issue he talked about, rarely if ever seeing any of the other candidates given the same treatment. I knew what was coming, just like with Maverick McCain and Moderate Mitt he was being plumped as the anti-GOP GOP candidate right up until he locked up the nomination and then they would "discover" he was literally Hitler. But I also knew it wouldn't work this time around because Trump would not go into the defensive crouch McCain and Mitt did and the media would be unable to help themselves, they'd have to cover Trump like a 5-alarm hotel fire and they'd be reacting to him rather than him reacting to them. They'd already sold their audience on the idea that Trump was the most important man in the world, they weren't going to be able to walk that back when they were too busy playing catch-up in the news cycle with whatever latest outrageous thing Trump said or did. By the time they put out one fire, Trump would have lit another. And I'm also betting you're going to see a slew of mea culpa books coming out this spring by journalists explaining how they blew it in giving Trump so much free media coverage, reacting to him rather than getting in front of things by ignoring the sizzle and focusing on the steak. Too bad the media is built on selling the sizzle. You might ought to read Don Surber's books, Trump The Press and Trump The Establishment.
I think what you were actually seeing was Trump's incredible energy and street smarts. Jeb was back home reading a book. Hillary was sleeping or passed out. I would be willng to bet good money that Bernie or Kasich or any candidate that would call in and/or make himself available would have gotten air time. But for the most part they are afraid to. They only want carefully scripted appearances with friendly media or crowds. Trump was a Wolverine, Bernie was a chihuahua, Jeb was a pussy cat and Hillary was a hibernating panda.
"Marriage provides socioeconomic stability "
Said, right up to the divorce. Based on my trips to England, I'd say it's a tossup between the cuisine and weather.
If you want to understand how much trouble the world is in today read the two articles:
"The First American Revolution" "How Is Mass Islamic Immigration Working Out In Europe?" Our choice is to either fight or submit. Until you understand that you do not understand the Muslim invasion. In my lifetime (and I'm pretty old already) I will see open fighting in France, Italy, Spain and Germany. Maybe England and Sweden too. It's coming, it's inevitable the only unknown is will we wake up before they have the odds in their favor. I know, I know. Many don't agree. You will. Right now the elite in Europe are like the Jews in Europe in 1933. Soon they will be like the Jews in Europe in 1939. Soon everyone will get it. Actions speak louder than words. According to an old minister, the people that don't agree really have no idea of the Islamic intention. How so many can be so blind is beyond me.
In my totally biased opinion, and based on nothing but my gut feeling...John Podesta is a creep.
Why Did Danish Vikings Move to England?
Well, the Vikings came to Briton as the Angles, Jutes and Saxons from the Danish peninsula had before them. Of course, the Vikings also expanded eastward into what is now western Russia, Ukraine, etc. developing trade down to the Mediterranean via the rivers. And they expanded, raiding and settling in northern France. This brings us to William the Bastard who picked up a cooler nickname in 1066. He also was the progeny of Vikings. In what would be a terrible bit of imperialism, cultural appropriation if the SJWs were aware of the history of Western Culture, the Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and Normans call the original in habitants, the Britons, the Welsh, which derives from a germanic word meaning "foreigner. Welsh, Wales, Wallace, Walloons, Vlachs, Wallachia, Volokh - even "walnut" are from that root.
To be a "stranger," not-from-around-here, is a very big deal in all human societies, even in much of America and Canada, and in Imperial cities. In a related concept, the words hostile, hospitality, hotel, host, ghost, guest, and hospital all come from the same (also Indo-European) root *ghosti. Re picture:

QUOTE: We will therefore conclude with the perhaps unforeseen result, that democracy, when crowned with power, seeks rather what it considers the well-being of the community than the liberty of the individual. *** Therefore, without prejudice against any one proposed reform, it is impossible not to end, if not with the deduction, at least with the suggestion - that (for some reason which we will not now attempt to fathom) the three institutions - of private property, of marriage, and of personal liberty from State control - are so inseparably bound together that neither one may fall without the other two. --The Ethics of Democracy by F.J. Stimson. Scribner's Magazine (1887) QUOTE: Most pietists took the following view: Since we can't gauge an individual's morality by his following rituals or even by his professed adherence to creed, we must watch his actions and see if he is really moral. From there the pietists concluded that it was everyone's moral duty to his own salvation to see to it that his fellow men as well as himself are kept out of temptation's path. That is, it was supposed to be the State's business to enforce compulsory morality, to create the proper moral climate for maximizing salvation. In short, instead of an individualist, the pietist now tended to become a pest, a busybody, a moral watchdog for his fellow man, and a compulsory moralist using the State to outlaw "vice" as well as crime. --Murray Rothbard Social Justice is just the new phrase for the old moralist compulsion to control others so that your "righteousness" will ensure your salvation. Is there a data base somewhere that gives us a good estimate as to how many have graduated (undergrad degree) since 1990? It will help us to understand the opposition we will have to overcome to restore our democracy. How many of "them" are out there? Regarding Mack Beggs the "transgender" wrestler.
