Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Anti-vaxxers
I have seen claims on Facebook that vaccines are imported from China. I am skeptical of this claim yet so many of the products in your corner drug store are imported. When you see the line on a medicine bottle "distributed by", what does that mean in terms of location of manufacture? Anyone? It is my understanding that "distributed by" could mean manufactured anywhere other than the US. While shopping for US grown foods if it says distributed by I won't buy the product. If it is manufactured in the US they usually proudly say made in the USA. I am not of course an official, but this is my understanding.
I just think it's funny to see the NYT raising the alarm about people spreading false information and misleading the public about the truth.
As I pointed out elsewhere, the moral of The Boy Who Cried Wolf isn't that liars aren't believed even when they tell the truth, the moral is that you're going to be in big trouble if you're stupid enough to keep trusting a known liar to safeguard your valuables. Part of the reason people will believe nonsense is because people like the NYT have lost any credibility as nonsense-debunkers, and whose fault is that? NYT, true to form, can't bring itself to name the politically well-connected New York anti-vaxxer who met with Pres. Trump.
It's Joe Kennedy. Of those Kennedys. I guess if you say the name "Kennedy" three times quickly in succession, it summons and painful, outraged howl from the NYT readership. And is therefore to be avoided at all costs. I can just imagine the interview.
"You wanted to see me?" "I wanted to talk about vaccines and how you should ban them because they're dangerous." "Heard about the latest smallpox outbreak in Africa?" "I don't think I have..." "That's because it was eradicated by vaccination. You're an idiot, and I don't have time for idiots especially with the Kennedy name. There's the door, get the hell out." Megan McArdle and outrage. Not to excuse Trump, but I would point out that the forces that have been tearing apart and undermining most of America's institutions emerged decades ago and are ongoing. I don't see how Trump started it.
Megan got a lot of push back from people who comment on her posts about this (it's almost up there with the OMG electing Trump means thermonuclear war one before the election). I don't expect her to like Trump much given her positions but the dissonance between her resigned acceptance of Obama's bad behaviors, and the degree to which she accepts the most negative interpretations of Trump's, is a bit disheartening. She's usually far more fair mind than this though.
She writes for money. Sometimes she gets it wrong. Or, doesn't care if so.
Ungovernable:
Look to Wisconsin and the failed effort to derail Scott Walker. The one thing you can rely on is that the wannabes in the "resistance" won't bring anything fresh or creative. "Fresh" or "creative" would be actually convincing voters to get on your side. When the left throws temper tantrums, impedes the process of government, conducts themselves as children rather than adults, they will only attract a handful of supporters who are equally childish.
Adults wants adult solutions to problems. Not protests and boycotts. If Democrats would handle themselves in a reasonable way, voters might listen. Such as propose solutions rather than be 'against' everything the other side is 'for.' They need to provide actual policies and solutions. Hillary was the largest example of this. Only nice-sounding sounds bites. No actual policies that people were interested in or believed in. I was intrigued by the LePen article from No Parasan! I had never even considered looking at their party as anything but European-style rightism. Any mentions in the past about their support for socialism I dismissed as "Well, it's France, what do you expect?"
Additionally, the counter-interpretation of the Emma Lazarus poem at the bottom of that article was also new to me. Focusing on those other lines in the same poem does give it a different feel. I think the real outrage on the left is that Trump represents the segment of America that is tired of being demonized. To hear feminazis talk, I am the most dangerous specimen on the planet since I am a white Christian conservative male.
We are not the ones forcing genital circumcision on our females. Nor do we tolerate rape in the name of religion. We don't discourage our daughters from driving or getting an education. Why the anger then? And I am not the only one who thinks so. Here is an African lesbian feminist who says it, too: http://legalinsurrection.com/2014/04/ayaan-hirsi-ali/#more They are angry at you and despise you, because you have independent thoughts. You don't toe the politically correct line. It's really as simple as that.
This is a left wing conspiracy to seize power. The left wing is a loose conglomeration of special interest groups and many of them are aligned with and funded by communist groups. Make no mistake they intend to win and they will become more violent and more disgusting over time. The radical feminists are only interested in furthering their own special treatment but if that means that they must support the radical Muslims of the left to get what they want they will do it gladly. The radical and racist blacks are only interested in their own special privileges and quotas but if they have to support the LQBTG to get what they want they will. What they want is legislation and court rulings that give them special treatment and free stuff. They want to loot the middle class and taxes and bureaucratic rules are the vehicle they will use to do it.
No surprise to me that law makers and regulators hate farmers markets. To much freedom going on here. To much opportunity to not pay your taxes. To few opportunities for graft. We are the government, we must control everything! Take the name farmers out of it, and these things never would have gotten has far as they have.
Alt-Left? Read somewhere someone named them the ctrl-left, and that seems a better description.
