Maggie's FarmWe are a commune of inquiring, skeptical, politically centrist, capitalist, anglophile, traditionalist New England Yankee humans, humanoids, and animals with many interests beyond and above politics. Each of us has had a high-school education (or GED), but all had ADD so didn't pay attention very well, especially the dogs. Each one of us does "try my best to be just like I am," and none of us enjoys working for others, including for Maggie, from whom we receive neither a nickel nor a dime. Freedom from nags, cranks, government, do-gooders, control-freaks and idiots is all that we ask for. |

Wednesday, February 8. 2017Donald the Barbarian Is The Donald half-nuts? I sort-of think so. It's why he was elected. Overturn tables, rattle cages, slash and burn, etc. I think I figgered it all out. His mom, Mary Ann Macleod, was a penniless immigrant from the Isle of Lewis, outside Stornaway. Lots of wild and crazy Clan Macleods up there - or used to be before most of them sensibly emigrated to America where the living is easy. Trump's mom worked as domestic help in NYC before marrying Fred Trump, the real estate developer of German extraction. As I understand it, the Hebrides islanders are like high-octane Highlanders. They had to be, to fight to survive the elements, the sea, the Danes, rival clans, and the Brits. Women as tough and stubborn as the men. A semi-civilized, fighting, reckless, ignorant, defiant breed. Conan the Barbarian was modeled after highland Celtic warriors. Barbarians. America was fed up with its elite overlords who always knew better than us, the great unwashed. Comments

Jesus overturned the money changers tables. I think Trump is doing some of that.
QUOTE: But there were valid reasons for people to be worried about Trump too. NASSIM TALEB: Well, if you’re a businessman, for example, what Trump said didn’t bother you. The intellectual class of no more than 2,00,000 people in the U.S. don’t represent everyone upset with Trump. The real problem is the ‘faux-expert problem’, one who doesn’t know what he doesn’t know, and assumes he knows what people think. An electrician doesn’t have that problem. And Trump commanded, "Applecart, turn over!" And lo, the applecart went wheels-up, spilling the apples far and wide.
I think Trump is the direct result of the anger over watching Reid, Pelosi and Obama screwing the country over. I do believe Reid is a genuine dickhead and is so intentionally. He takes pleasure in it. I believe Pelosi may well be simply stupid and think what she says and does is cute or somehow intelligent but really has no clue how she comes across. I believe Obama set out to destroy this country, tried really hard to do it but was stymied and actually found golf and vacationing to more fun anyway. I suspect his failure to destroy us (completely) infuriates his handlers/string pullers.
Trump in his own non-PC way spoke so much truth to power that voters gravitated to him. They gladly overlook his blemishes because he is the only (well one of the few) politicians/leaders that makes any sense at all. In a strange and ironic way the Democrats have decided to double down on their hate message, lying, demeaning citizens and kissing the ass of illegal aliens as their scheme to win back the voters. Now the judiciary has decided to embrace this crazy plan as well and the Democrat Brown Shirts have decided that Americans just aren't assaulted and spit on enough and if we just burn down enough buildings and cars Middle America will embrace the left. And somehow Trump is the 'Barbarian' ! Thoughtful and well said, IB. The only thought I would add is that sometimes folks want change regardless. Hell, maybe even change for the worse as in the ol' saying you gotta hit bottom... etc. Give it another 100 days and we'll see how all this goes.
“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.”
H.L. Mencken About fits the bill. Loving the comments above.
I supported the Donald because I secretly wanted to see D.C. burned to the ground, and only he and Bernie seemed willing to light the match. Was afraid Bernie would set his clothes on fire in the process, though. Trump knows how to pick winners.I smile whenever I think of his Cabinet picks, some very smart folks with a lot of expertise. I read that Condi and John Bolton are both unofficial advisors. Condi is amazing on Russia and Bolton is just plain amazing. I am impressed by the fact that Trump is not threatened by intelligent people, unlike his very insecure predecessor. Here's hoping that he does as well with the Supreme Court in the future. Please God, no more Kagans or Sotomeyors.
I miss Antonin Scalia the way I miss Andrew Breitbart-hard to replace men like them. The Isle of Lewis is really far north, as in about the same latitude as Juneau, Alaska. Only the Gulf Stream Current keeps that island - and, indeed, most of the British Isles - habitable. The current seriously moderates the effect of being as far north as the islands are. West of Lake Superior, the border between Canada and the USA is the 49th parallel: that's south of all the British Isles.
So The Donald's mother comes from an island very dark in winter, and very light in summer, and with a climate moderated by the Gulf Stream. It's a hardy people who could live there. Much is said of the influence of the President's father on his son's chosen career (not to mention inheritance). Given where his mother grew up, am willing to bet she was a force in her son's life. I think of the campaign slogans of the two most recent Presidents and the background rhetoric for their slogans. P. Obama slogan was "Hope and Change" birthed from the idea that America needed and he would provide a "fundamental transformation". Trump ran on the idea of "make America Great again". That language presumed that over the past 8+ years there had been a diminution of the country's greatness and a resulting weakness. Each President assured us he "loved" the country. However which one's slogan, encapsulating their belief, showed that love. I posit that "Hope and Change" showed a profound lack of love - my parents and in laws have both been married 55+ years, and while I have heard them say they wish their spouse was healthy, never have I heard them say simultaneously that they love their spouse and would fundamentally transform any characteristic of their spouse.
The antiTrumpers and neverTrumpers, to include a large number of rinos, do not realize that Trump is not their problem but it is the people who voted for Trump that is their problem. They have the cart before the horse. They refused to listen when the tea party came on the scene and many still refuse to listen with the altright on the scene. Name them what you will but they will only increase in number while the antis of the elite try to frustrate their push into the political system. If the elite continue their process the country will burn because the Trumpers view the elite as gutting their future and existence and the ScotsIrish Trumpers will not be defeated.
So Trump is a MacLeod of the Clan McLeod? That explains a lot, doesn't it? That means the body count will rise and the head will roll .... awesome ....
